NATIONA L AWARDS

Recommended Posts

The Post below on classification got a bit side tracked with talk of National Award nominations...I apologize for my part in that blush.gif

It did however get me thinking that with so many new folks stopping by the DF often and new people to the AACA in general., many may not know what a NATIONAL AWARD/Nomination even is?

So, I was hoping maybe some of the guys here might feel more comfortable than I, in giving a short history of the National Award, how many cars actually get Nominated ( about 200?) vs. how many Actually win ( 25? ) though the nomination is great itself, and even some talk about what some of these awards actaully are?? Tommy mentioned the two he was honored with for his Impalas, but what are they?? what's the history of these special awards he got and I would guess, since I am up for nomination this year with my 66 Chevy.. I may be in the running for one of the same awards Tommy got?

Well, you get the point...an education is needed, some for me, and some for the many newbies that only read and never Post wink.gif

anybody up to the task crazy.gif

Mike, GREAT TOPIC! Few people know about the awards when they show up at an AACA National Meet for the first time. To have the honor of winning one says a lot about the restoration of your vehicle, it is one of the few that just jumps out of the lineup and deserves special recognition.

Hi, Mike...

Go to the AACA site...scroll down a little and hit Rummage Box. Wherein you will see various seasonal Rummage Box posts.

Click on the Winter 2003. Dave Zimmerman explains just what a National Awards Judge's duties are, etc...

I have a very old copy of AACA Magazine (I believe from the '60's that explains each National Award and its history.

If you keep the AACA Magazine, look at the March-April, or, June-July, and you will see the winners list, what award they received.

Hope this helps a little...

Mike,

Maybe someone from the National Awards Committee would address that. Each of the awards are explained in the AACA Winners book that is compiled by the National Awards Committe and is available from the AACA. To explain the significance and history of each of the awards would take all night for me to type. Again, Congratulations to all those who have been nominated this year. By all means, go to Philly and enjoy the weekend!!!!

Those guys from Richmond do rather well at Philly! If you've ever had the pleasure to see that Impala SS you'll know why it's an award winner!!! And, Tommy enjoys showing it too, even at local meets. As far as awards go, I know there is an "exhibitors brochure" that should be going out to every new member and anyone who has never attended a National Meet before, but Im not sure what is published regarding the annual awards given out at Philly. Perhaps thats something we can look into providing to our new members. Look forward to seeing you all in Philly in Feb.

No Takers eh?? confused.gif

While I appreciate the responses, ( Peter and others ) it's sorta like asking Mom how to spell a word and she says " LOOK IT UP " smile.gif

I guess with so little meaningful discussions that take place here after HERSHEY is over....I thought maybe somebody might take a stab...again, for the new guys and LURKERS... How many Nominations are made? How many awards actually given? is it a Plaque? a Medallion, a Ribbon?? see what I mean??

Oh well...maybe a future AACA Magazine article in the making cool.gif

OK, Mike, I'll take a stab at a few of the questions. I formerly served on National Awards, but that has been almost 10 years ago, so my info is no doubt stale.

The award is a silver tray appropriately engraved. Real silver, because they tarnish. smirk.gif First hand observation from my wife. grin.gif

They are given for outstanding vehicles as well as for service to the club and the hobby.

Nominations normally are well into the 100s.

I do not know how many National Awards there are today, but including awards for service to AACA as well as vehicle awards, the number must be around 75. It keeps growing. Occasionally on a vehicle award there will be ties.

I think this addresses some of your questions. If you want to come back with additional specific questions, I will try to answer them. That will be easier than trying to write a pamphlet. smile.gif

Hi Mike

I liked your post on National Awards.I was hoping for more feedback also.

I'm one of thoses newbies that only read and never post.So I got to clicking around and came up with this.

On the page where your post is I clicked on (Views) and started looking around.

Well on page 2 at the bottom there is a post on National Awards from 2000.

There are 44 replies 9 left by Howard.

Hope you find this helpful.

Hi Rich, Welcome to the Forum, and thanks for the search tip. There was a series in Antique Automobile a few year back that featued a National Award and the history behind it. Many of the Awards that the winners names are added to are famous racing trophies that stay on display at National Headqurters, the tray that the winners get at Philadelphia is theirs to keep (and polish) for ever.

Thanks Howard, appreciate your remarks here and in previous discussions. I guess maybe the lack of responses just goes to show why the topic needs to be discussed....maybe nobody knows the answers grin.gif

Rich...congrats! You are no longer a LURKER!!! I have seen your car in the past and it is an example of what TRUE MUSCLE CARS are all about and that cars of the 60's and 70's are here to stay!

Mike,

Email me your mailing address and I'll send you the AACA Winners book, it explains each award, what it's given for and also lists the previous winners of each award. By reading this you can figure out which award you might be eligible for and you'll see why this is a difficult question to answer. And yes, Howard is right, you gotta keep the trophy polished, my first one was an oval silver platter with handles, the second was a round silver platter, they have your name, name of the award and make of car engraved. My email is: 1real61ss@comcast.net
