A beautiful Christmas envelope with a newsletter from the Brass-Nickel Touring Region editored by Judy Edwards AKA 24T42. Thank you Judy. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. After comparing my newsletter to yours, I wonder how I got an award last year. You other editors need to check the Brass-Nickel out in Philly this year. Thanks again Judy, and Merry Christmas. I have to admit that I stole one of her Model T articles when I needed a short filler article. She uses some unique clipart in her pages that I would love to learn of her source. I am glad to be able to exchange newsletters with Judy. Perhaps one day our little rag will be able to be somewhat worthy of the Brass-Nickel Touring Region's excellent publication (yea....right).Judy is an exceptionaly gifted and super friendly person that contributes a lot to the AACA. She will tell you where she gets stuff, how much it might cost, offer you her own stuff, and teach you how to do everything she can do (if you have the patience and the talent to learn it). While some people fear to help others out of some misplaced idea that it would lessen their own value or product, she forges ahead, dragging all of us to even higher levels. Why in the world isn't she putting on a seminar this year at Philly, or is she? I noticed so many things in her newsletter that are beyond me. Yes, I want to learn more. I was so shocked, no, fascinated, to see a Christmas envelope(complete with Santa picture) with a newsletter enclosed, very impressive. Judy and I have the same kind of taste in automotive artwork and her postcard collection is probably among the tops of it's kind going. You are right Jan, she is very willing to share info and in my opinion does need to be helping with the Philly Seminar. Why just yesterday I was carrying on some discussion via email with our VP of publications concerning the Publications Seminar in Philly. But please remember the Brass-Nickel Touring Region focuses on cars manufactured on or before 1931 so most of what I use is free of the copyright rules. 1. For the masthead on page 1 (which changes with every issue) and for my column "From the Mailbox", I often use antique postcards that feature antique cars in some form of other. This is a great resource as they are affordable and the range that they cover is tremendous. They can be comical and humorous, a drawing, or actual photographs. 2. My collection of the AACA's magazine, the Antique Automobile, goes back to the 40s. There is a lot of great clipart here. Look particularly at the commercial ads and AACA event ads. I even found some great clipart in the AACA cookbook which was published in 1980. I found my copy on Ebay. I also have publications from other car clubs - the Model T International and Horseless Carriage to name a few.When in Philly, look at the show fliers on the table. I find a lot of great stuff here.3. I have a lot of early trade publications like Motor magazine. This is a great resource and they have great covers. Next time you are walking around the flea market and see a stack of magazines, stop and take a look at the illustrations as well as the articles.Of course to use most of these suggestions you will need a scanner. Mine does great on newer photo's, but I have to hold the cover down tightly to keep light from messing up the "folds" in some material. Loved your old Christmas Scenes in your December issue. 24T42 Posted December 11, 2003 Share Posted December 11, 2003 Wayne,I am sorry to tell you but you will have to wait longer than January for the next issue of 'On the Road, Again.' I only publish from April to November. Being a touring club of mainly open cars, we shut down for the winter. Brrr!! I do have a couple of back issues laying around if you don't think you can wait that long. I can even mail them to you in reverse order and one issue every other month - that should take you to April.I have found that when scanning older articles, pictures, and etc., it is best to first make a black and white copy. Then scan the copy not the original. Somehow the copier does some sort of magic that cuts down on the amount of clean up work that is required. You have much more to offer than you give yourself credit for. People will be hanging on your every word during the seminar, following you out the door with more questions, and catching you later at odd moments for a follow up question or two!And, yes, you may think you were "only an attendee" at these sessions for the past few years, but you weren't a silent participant. The rest of us benefited from the comments you made during the give and take portions of the seminar, and from one-on-one conversations at other times.
