WillBilly53
i've taken the stainless teeth off the grille to polish up and also to blast the grille and repaint it. i've got the grille nice and ready, but on some of the teeth there is rust from the grill that grabbed on to them (mostly on on the under side of the teeth). i was taken some steel wool and rubbing some of the rust off with great success. but then i saw a post about not using steel wool to clean stainless. what's the proper way to get rid of this rust? Thanks! Guest Dynaflo2
You are right not to use steel wool on stainless. Small, even microscopic bits of the steel wool will be imbedded in the stainless and cause rust spots in the stainless. Get yourself some scothbrite pads at the hardware store or industrial supply shop (not the grocery store). Scothbrite comes in different coarseness grades, much like sandpaper. The higher the number, the finer the coarseness. If you want to get a mirror-like finish, you will need to finish off the polishing with rouge and a polishing wheel. If you have any misgivings about doing the work, you can go to a local metals fabricator and ask if they do any pharmaceutical or food-grade stainless work. Once you check their work, maybe they'd be willing to do the polishing for you. You could also just ask them for a scrap piece of stainless sheet (not plate....too rough) and practice on that first. I hope this helps.
