Guest
Once the the new Packard V8 had been locked up for production. Packard engineers had been tossing around the idea of a V12. Packard had what it though was a perfect way to build a new V12 on the cheap.. Cast a block half again as long as the V8's,bore the usual 8 cylinders, then reposition the block on the machining line and bore four more. According to product planner Dick Stout, the proposed V12 would have retained the V8's 90 degree confirguration, but that meant crank throws would have been 30 degree off for the desired in step timing sequence. To compensate, each throw was tp be spllit and staggered 30 degrees. . The original plan was to use the Clipper 320 cid Clipper Deluxe Super block which with four more cylinderswould have had 480 cid, exactly 7 more cubic inches more than Packards last 12 cylinder of 1939. Tooling cost would have been around $750,000, which was modest. Production if it had got to that stage would have been deliberate and limited, activated during slack timesor when V8 supplies were adequate. Craig there is your information of the proposed Packard V12 of 1955.
WCraigH
Brian:Your "photoshop" Patrician V-12 is very cool! If real, it would have been spectacular, yet intimidating to drive. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
