Restorer32
Personally we've always had good service from the folks at Coker although I have noticed recently that the people you actually talk to are more "order takers" than advisors. I am also fairly certain that regardless of who's name is on the tire, for most obsolete sizes there is, in fact, only one manufacturer. Bear in mind that these folks have invested a ton of money over the years producing obscure tire sizes that they need to stock for extended lengths of time in hopes of selling enough to clear a profit. How many of those 25" Grey Michelins do you think they sell per year? These businesses are performing a valuable service to the antique car hobby and should be commended for their dedication. Sure, they could produce a tire that wears like modern tires, but would you be able to afford them ?
Guest imported_PackardV8
What we are experienceing is change in the demand of the classic car owner. What i am hearing from many different owners thru many different sources and events is that classic vehicle owners are EXPECTING tires that are reliable and have reasonably good handing characteristics - NOT wear complaints. The trailer queen set seem to be diminishing and giving way to people who ACTUALLY DRIVE their cars. This is one reason why alot of shows and events no longer have judging. This change in demand is not limited to tires either. it seems to be crossing over into ignition, lubricants, electrics, lighting, paint and other areas. Guest Curt Fouse
A decade or two ago we attended a tour in SD. We drove our 42 Chevy from WV and it was douring a drought and very hot. We had Lester tires on the Chevy. No problem on the trip but the following season the tires started loosing the tread (cap?) from the tires. One of the friends at our local club said that he thought that we should demand a refund, but my thinking was that if I couldn't get tires for the car then the car would be of no use. The tires had good tread but were several years old. I am about ready to buy all new tires and tubes for my 30 Buick. I have read a lot of retoric recently about tires, and wonder which to go with. I guess they are alll DOT approved!Good luck to all. Curt
