Guest
My father was a schooled auto mechanic and race driver from about 1910, then aircraft until 1958 or so. I've had these two 'things' since he passed in '63, but never asked anyone what they are. My guess is that they cold be steps for a speedster, but haven't been able to find a close enough photo to verify or disprove that. Any good Stutz enthusiast should be able to tell me. Many thanks in advance.

1937hd45
Welcome to the Forum! I believe the aluminum plates are valve spring covers that would attach to the side of the block, the hole in the center would hold them in place with a countersunk screw. The holes on the bottom may be something added later on as oil drains. If I can find a photo in my stuff I'll post it later.

Guest
You're right, they are valve spring covers. They come off the Stutz 16 valve 4 cylinder T head engine of the teens. In the picture I have, which is out of an original catelogue, the two holes are on the bottom, so I don't think they were added later. Incidently, both sides of the engine used these plates, so there were 4 per car.
