"Peter Gariepy changed the title to...."

What is the deal with this guy changing the titles on so many different threads? Does he think that we're a bunch of stupid third graders and he's our teacher? I am a member of dozens of different websites and have never seen anyone do this on any of them. Is he on some kind of a power trip or something? Does this bother anyone else? Please reply quickly because he will probably delete this thread as soon as he sees it....

Don't just blame Peter. I do it all the time. To keep it from happening, write a title that makes sense and describes what the topic is about. That is what titles are for.

Doesn’t bother me in the least.  Actually I appreciate it.  He does this for the benefit of the person posting to better the attention to whatever subject is.

I agree.

I believe easiest way to avoid any thread title changes is to make sure it (or anything else one comments/posts) is written so that it will make sense to anyone who might read it, presently or in the future, be they a third grader or a great grandmother of one.

And while English isn’t my first language nor have I ever received any formal education for it, I’m mindful of this handicap every time I post something and try to make myself as clear )and hopefully understood) as possible.

For future readers of the many threads here it is critical to make the threads searchable.  I have learned a phenomenal amount of information from reading old threads after using the search command to locate desired subjects.  Concise and clear titles help  generate concise and clear responses which are easily searched later.

Read this:

"Does he think that we're a bunch of stupid third graders?"

No, I think it’s more about people being lazy. They’d benefit from posting clear, relevant topic titles and full descriptions!

I can either update the titles or remove them entirely. Updating them is in everyone’s best interest, so I’ll prioritize that.  BTW:  The other moderators and I have been at this for 26 years, and we’ve only had a handful of complaints along the way.

That said, I’m not going to let vague, “clickbait” titles slide. For instance, today’s new topic titled “advice needed”—seriously?! This doesn’t help the original poster or anyone who clicks in expecting useful information. To top it off, the description is equally vague. Maybe they really are third graders!

Another pet peeve... posting a topic in the wrong forum. 🤪

I know nobody reads the rules or guidelines, but they’re there for a reason! (Did you catch the two in red!?)

Forum Guidelines

  • Follow the forum rules.
  • Post in the appropriate forum.
  • Write complete topic titles. (Examples)
  • Include year, make & model when appl.
  • Follow individual forum guidelines.
  • Stay on the topic of the post.
  • Always be on the lookout for scammers.
  • Report any suspicious or scam private messages to the moderators.
  • Remember the golden rule.

"Before you speak (post or comment) ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid." - Bernard Meltzer

Thanks Peter - yes I also find it irritating when I see those "third-grade" titles.  I've come very close to just deleting some of them, especially when the OP posts a plea for help or info and them seems to just disappear.

If we all could follow the forum rules - the guidelines ( thank you for posting these again most do not look at them) then this conversation and comments would not have to happen.

BE CLEAR about the title AND also the description - posting a photo of something and not giving measurements or even laying a ruler next to it turns the request for information into a huge guessing game - sure you can see it and know how big it is but one has to realize that something could probably be / might be 8 inches long or 18 inches long. Hard to tell.

It is like saying you are hungry and not giving a hint as to what you want to eat - soup? steak? pudding? berries?

Same here and while I don’t have time to read nor much interest following majority of the topics discussed here, seeing any click-bait or “third-grader” (or lower) level subject titles usually prevents me even taking a cursory look, let alone reply to it.

If one wants to be taken seriously …

The most popular topics on this message board:

1. What kind of oil should I use?

2. I'm going to convert to 12V, how do I do it?

3. I'm buying a car without a title, is that a mistake?

4. Whining about Peter G.

I used to belong to a (non car) forum for an online database. There is a section for trying to identify unknown items and literally about 95% of all threads there are titled "need help" or "can't find".

Completely useless to try and find it later if you happen to come across new info. Even if you just want to go read it again.

I wish I could have changed thread titles there, I would have made Peter look like a 3rd grader 😄

From the responses above, it’s clear that most people appreciate when titles are adjusted for clarity.

No, your post wasn’t deleted.

Your original topic was posted in the wrong forum, so another moderator moved it to the correct one.

Unfortunately, we can’t please everyone!
