wheelsnjunk
Hello, my first post, about my first Packard. I have a 1930 Packard 726, the original Detroit Lubricator carb is gone, replaced with a carter BB1. This is no show car, I just want to go to a local cruise in, or such. I'm not going to put 10k into a repro Detroit 51, I'd like to see any options, such as manifold changes to go later downdraft ( Oh, I could feel the Packard folks shudder ) or any other ideas. Thanks, I'm prepared for the onslaught....
wheelsnjunk
Oh, forgot to add, the vacuum tank and system is also gone, reaplaced with an electric fuel pump
carbking
I will leave the proposed manifold change to others, not my area of expertise. As far as an updraft carb that will fit the original manifold is concerned: Either a Stromberg SF-3 / SFM-3 or a Zenith 63AW12 / 263M2E12 can be rebuilt with a Packard calibration to run the engine MUCH better than the BB-1. The chances of finding either with the Packard calibration are not quite as bad as trying to find an honest politician! Someone is going to have to research the calibration, and someone is going to have to do the work. The problem with trying to install an aftermarket carb on a Packard is the Packard throttle linkage. I won't call it "hokey" (others might), but it is certainly different than most of the rest of the carburetor world. Jon
wheelsnjunk
Well, I asked the question and I got the foremost expert on vintage carburetion on the planet! I have been reading your posts to questions for a long time, I truly appreciate your taking the time to help not only myself, but the hobby as a whole. So, now that I have a shopping list, where to find these carbs? 1
