How do I clean up this crankshaft for the rear main seal?

Without taking it out.

 

It’s not as bad as it looks but needs polished up.  I have about 1/2” access around the perimeter, easily cleaned with a toothbrush.  Emery cloth, crocus cloth, etc. 

 

Its a Mercedes-Benz M117 450 V8.

1000 or 1500 grit sandpaper long enough to "shoe-shine" the seal area.

Cleaned mine with crocus w/ WD and nylon stocking wrapped around to assist friction spinning with equal pressure .

550 cord helps the sandpaper. What's 550? Parachute cord. Watch you tube videos. 

 

But I have done it with just the sandpaper for light cleaning.

 

Last resort, is there an available sleeve? ❓ But I'm sure sandpaper will fix it just fine.

If you decide to use Scotch Brite it also comes in belts rather than pads. Much better for polishing cylindrical shapes...............Bob

Buy or machine a thin Speedy sleeve - Otherwise its still going to leak. If you cant buy one and good shop can make one. Light press fit or tight fit with locktite.
