Hi there, I’m reinstalling the head on my I-6 Chrysler and I’m just getting hung up on a couple things. One is the torque spec for the head bolts, the other is if I should use sealant on the bolts or not. If so, what type would be best?

Thanks for any help!

Motors Says: Final tightening should be from 52.5 to 57.5 on Cylinder head nuts. 65 to 70 on plain head cap screws, and 67.5 to 72.5 on cupped head capscrews.

Lower number is for oily threads, upper is for dry threads.

I hope this makes a bit of sense to you.  Never saw a torque spec in .5 lbs before.

As a general  spec,  65  is what I would use.

Use #2 permatex on all the head bolt threads as they all reach into coolant.

Use a 7/16" X 14 thread chaser to clean up the block deck threaded holes.

Follow the torque pattern in three steps working up to 65-70 ft lbs.

You'll be golden..😉

Been a long term project, trying to pick away at it whenever I have the time. It’s a 1939 Chrysler Royal Windsor, when I first got it the motor was free but 3-4 valves were stuck so the first start was unsuccessful. Pulled the head, got them all free. I have to seal everything up and try it again. Looked pretty good on the inside, so I’m optimistic that it’ll run.

One step at a time. You’ll get it running in no time. After you get the head installed do a compression test. That will tell you a lot about the condition.
