The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, edited by John Gunnell states 20,582 1956 Mercury Medalist 2dr Sedans built. Note: The 1956 Mercury Medalist series was a lowest-priced line added for 1956. The two-door sedan was base priced at $2,254; or at the Ford dealership add $95 for a 1956 Ford Fairlane V8 4dr Town Victoria hardtop. The choice was between a stripped-down Mercury or a fancy Ford.
Twisted Shifter
I think the subject '56 Mercury Medalists above had the chrome sweep side trim added at a later date. Factory brochure shows plain-jane 2-door base sedan as the only Medalist for '56. (this 2-door is NOT a '55, there was no medalist series in 1955. Disregard the yellow Monterey sedan) FYI: $2254 in 1956 is equal to $26,065 in 2024 Full line brochure: Edited September 5 by Twisted Shifter (see edit history)
The 55er
Later in the 1956 model year, Medalists also became available in Phaeton 4-door hardtops, 2-door Sport Coupes and 4-door sedans. Those later ones all had the full front to back lighting bolt side treatment and at that time it was added to the 2-door sedan models as well so this particular Medalist could have been built after mid-year.
58L-Y8
The '56 Mercury Medalist two-door sedan (70C) was introduced first as a stand-alone price-leader model without the sweeping trim which was added during the mid-1956 model year when the four-door sedan (73D), two-door hardtop (64E) and four-door hardtop 'Phaeton" (57D) joined the line-up. Medalists were priced appropriately $100 less than the next step up the model ladder, the Custom. Note the four-door hardtop 'Phaetons" is missing from the early 1956 brochure posted by Twisted Shifter. Initially only the low-roofed Sport Sedan carried over from its 1955 Montclair introduction was available but only as a Monterey (58B) and Montclair (58A). Even with the mid-year introduction, the four-door hardtop 'Phaetons', returned a total 53,091 sales (17.1%), bested the regular four-door sedans at 49,248 sales (15.9%). Such was the explosive popularity of the new four-door hardtop body style. At least the grandkids can enjoy the stuffed toys, if they're allowed in the car.
