Coating on my 28 aluminum block?

Recommended Posts

In the process of cleaning my 341A aluminum block for rebuilding, I used a paint stripper called Citristrip.  While scrubbing, I noticed it was removing what appeared to be a silver colored metallic coating.  I have no reason to believe that this motor has ever been rebuilt or even out of the car.  This stuff certainly left the block very clean but I’m afraid I may have removed some sort of original protective coating.  Anyone with any ideas about this?

Cadillac is new to me as I am used to Buicks.  I am doing a much needed complete restoration of this car.

thanks for your help!

Joel

Thinking some pictures may be helpful.  Also, in the process of cleaning up my tranny, I noticed it too had been painted with the aluminum paint.  It has a cast iron casing but the picture shows the aluminum coating after I scraped off the bulk grease and dirt.  There is no indication that this coating came later in its life as opposed to being original.  Pics show this on tranny and a closeup.
