'48 Roadmaster generator problem

Recommended Posts

Hello again,
now I need help with the generator (6 volt).

The alternator armature is broken and I'm figuring out the best way to fix it.

My '48 Buick has #1926761 stamped on the alternator end cap and 1923535 on the armature. Is that the original alternator?

There is a '54 55 56 Cadillac Generator Armature Delco 1923535' for sale on eBay, I wonder if it would fit my generator?
Didn't Cadillac switch to 12 volts in '53?

Or is it so that the field determines the voltage and not the armature. Electrical engineering is not my strongest area of expertise...

thanks
Timo

Is the armature physically broken, or bad electrically (e.g., shorted)?  If the latter, you may be able to have it re-wound, depending upon where you're located.

thanks EmTee, it needs a re-wound, which I didn't think was possible to do here in Finland,
at least easily, at a reasonable price...
