Couldn't Quite Do It...

Man! The really bad ones are after they put up a BIG sign warning that they are over height.

I've been responsible for fleets a few times in my career. Each of those crashes would result in a driver write up at a minimum. Unless their previous record was spotless, it would probably mean they'd be fired. In California, if you hit a railroad overcrossing like that, the railroad needs to inspect it immediately, resulting in a bill for thousands of dollars, even if there's no structural damage.

Norfolk Southern and NCDOT worked together a couple years ago to raise the Gregson Street underpass. They were able to gain about 8" more clearance and trucks still hit it almost monthly.

 

When we had to go to Raleigh NC for work training, meetings, whatever, taking Gregson Street thru downtown Durham was the quickest way to connect with the Durham Freeway and on into Raleigh. Unless, of course, something had run into the guillotine...
