Dealership Emblem - Brooklyn NY

I spotted this on the doorjamb. Perhaps your emblem was intended to be used in the same way?

That would be highly doubtful, the dealership would want the tag seen either by passengers or people looking at the vehicle. What you see on the Cadillac was the service tag which was something found on several of the upper price cars. (I think I have the same tag in my flea market stuff, but I won’t know for sure until it’s out at Luray next month…)

Here’s the equivalent one on my PA:

Sorry for my late entry in the Dealership Emblem discussion, I only just noticed it. I attach some photos below. The first is a Bergen dealership emblem. This emblem also has no obvious fixing on the back. It is found in several different colors and sometimes wrongly included in auto makers emblem collections. The next is a Harry Newman Special. This emblem has a threaded screw fixing. Harry Newman had a big Ford dealership but the "Special" in the emblem suggests it may have been used on a radiator but I cannot confirm this.

The Lasky emblem has already been mentioned and is listed as an auto manufacturer in 1916 in some references but there is no evidence to date to confirm this. The Lasky Motor Car Corporation claimed its inception from 1907 and by the early 1920's was based in Brooklyn and had become one of the largest authorized Ford dealerships in the area concerned with Ford commercial and passenger vehicles. The Lasky Motor Car Corporation also offered a full auto repair and maintenance service and was still operating as a Ford dealership through the 1950's. The emblem is found in blue and white or black and white enamel. I have seen it with no fixings on the back and some with a threaded screw. Interestingly, there are some other, larger Lasky Motor Car Corporation emblems, which are curved to fit a radiator, see photos attached. I believe they must have been attached to the radiator top but I have no idea what vehicles. Does anyone know more about these Lasky emblems?

Wayne Sheldon has referred to early auto dealerships which attached plates to the vehicles they sold, sometimes with serial numbers. The Van Automobile Company of St Louis, Missouri was one such company. The Van Automobile Company was organized in 1905 for the manufacture of automobiles but there is no evidence of any Van automobile having been built by this company. By 1907 and possibly earlier the company was an auto dealership. The photo below shows a painted brass nameplate produced by Van which shows their address in St Louis and gives a serial number.

As an example of a dealership emblem which was made to be displayed on the car radiator, see the attached photo of a very rare example of a beautifully made enamel finished emblem that was specially made by the Cadillac dealership, possibly in the 1930's. There are some other examples on display in the emblem collection at the Swigart Auto Museum.
