Parts have been located!! WTB - 1931 Buick Model 8-96S worm gear to drive distributor gear

Recommended Posts

Good evening, I need the worm gear located on the rear of the generator that drives the distributor gear. My distributor drive gear is severely worn, as is the worm gear that drives it. I was able to procure the last distributor gear that Bob's Automobilia had in stock, but unfortunately they do not have any of the worm gears left and no longer have a supplier for them. I would also appreciate any insight regarding replacement of the worm gear. Thanks.

Thank you to the members of this forum for your assistance in finding the parts I needed.

According to my parts manual, the distributor drive gear on the generator is the same part for all 1931/1932 engines.  I'll check my part pile to see the condition of my spare gears.

Please post pictures of the worm gear you need.  I think I may have an extra NOS gear but I’ll have to dig a bit to get to it.

Thanks,

Kent

This is for an earlier model, but very similar.

All my gears show wear.  If you can't find any anywhere else, I think the best of my used parts would be okay for a casual driver.

Thanks Bob, kar3516 is checking his parts supply for a possible NOS. I'll let you know if I need a fall back position.

These are the worm gears that I have; note that I have not cleaned them up to confirm unused condition and also that one is tagged 33 Buick 50.  First two pictures are from one end and the next two are with all gears flipped over in the same order.   The location of the key slots relative to the gear “ramps” seems to be all over the board and the one on the right end may be different (perhaps a smaller internal diameter).  I need to review my parts books and confirm the interchange between years, distributors, and engine displacement.  I have two Series 90 31-32 cars and if the five seemingly similar gears match I’ll be keeping at least three.

Wow, thanks for pictures. Be interesting to hear what you find out.

I ran out of time before I finished my research but so far apparently all 1931-1932 Buick 8 engines take the same part number 1837911 and this part number is verified correct for a 940T1 generator which fits the 31 and 32 Series 90 engine.  Since the gear isn’t stamped with a part number I just need to verify that 33 Series 50 is the same as that is the only attached identification .

Family issues prevented me from getting back to you earlier.  I cleaned up the first of the six gears this morning and it looks unused to me.  There are a few small dings on one end but I don’t think they will cause any issues.  I’m happy to send it to you; perhaps you have something I can use?  Please pm me to make arrangements.
