I have the 67 Ninety Eight Convertible

Well, thanks for all the help, folks. I took delivery on Saturday, and have started getting it in order. It needs a lot of small things, but I will get it there. The body and frame are remarkably solid and rust free. I have ordered the manuals on CD-Rom. I hope they are as nice as the paper versions. Not so good for, uh, browsing, I suppose.

I need to figure out how to add fluid to the convertible top hydraulics. Suppossedly that is why it is sluggish. I am a cynic, though, so I expect worse.

For that matter, I don't even know how to check the fluid level or what type of fluid it uses.

I am starting a list of things I need to locate- steering wheel, courtesy lamp lense for the passenger side back seat armrest.

The car was driven to me (NH) from Iowa. Halfway the alternator crapped out, so they finished off the drive on two more batteries. I just couldn't wait, so I grabbed an Autozone alternator (only thing open near me on Sunday). But I have the GM unit, which might be original, and I will see about rebuilding that.

I appreciate all the help!

The courtesy lamp lenses are available reproduction. Steering wheel may be an issue esp if it is a tilt-telescopic in any color except black. The 67 is a very popular Ninety Eight- at one time there were five in Mid Atlantic Olds Club alone, but I think the herd has thinned a bit.

The top hydraulics can use power steering fluid, trans fluid or brake fluid. The fill and bleed procedure should be on your CD-ROM manuals; if not, let us know and we'll walk you thru it.

Color?

The car is red with a black interior and white top. So the bad news is that it is a tilt + telescopic wheel, but the good news is that it is black. It looks like someone over tightened the screws on the back of the wheel and cracked it.

I love the car. Despite being only 60 here tonight, I did about 70 miles with the top down before I dropped it off at a friend of a friend who owns a shop specializing in suspensions. The front end it tight, but very noisy. He is willing to give me a thorough checkup and then I will take it to do (most of) the work. I'll let him do anything that is a real PITA.

As a matter of fact I found the lens at Fusick, so that made me happy.

All the weather stripping is shot and the passenger window doesn't go down.

I may be showing my age, but I have never had a carburated car which started as easily as this one. I just turn the key, even cold, and 1/2 second later it is idling like a top. Of course, most of the carbed cars I had before this probably weren't even road worthy.

Edit:

My manuals have yet to arrive, and so I have my first need for repair help: The right directional works just fine, but the lever doesn't stay in the "on" position- you have to hold it up. I called a couple of places and they both said that they would fail the car for that- pretty lame if you ask me. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on a quick fix? I am guessing I will have to pull the steering wheel, which I don't want to do since it is not in great shape. One guy said "you can't hold the stalk and turn the wheel at the same time, so it is therefore not operating correctly." To which I replied "Funny- I've been holding the stalk and turning the wheel."

Hey, congrats on the '67, I just picked up my '68 this weekend in South Dakota and drove it home. A 46,000 mile one owner, with some things needed, but what 35 year old lady is perfect!! Anyway, nice to know someone else just jumped into the Olds business with a 98 convertible.

That's pretty much exactly what mine looks like. I really need to get a digital camera and learn how to post photos.

I have only ever seen one other 67 ninety eight convertible on the road, in North Andover, MA I saw a silver one. Unfortunately, I was in my daily driver going the other way (a 99 Ford Escort, if you can believe that. But then, I d0 100 miles in heavy traffic each day).

I love the grille on the 67s- it is what makes them my favorite year. The Olds grilles were a little different that year.

Tell that gentleman his car has a huge fan, and let me know if he ever wnats to sell it. Mine is in fact the same shade of red lacquer, although his interior seems a slightly different black.

Edit:

Fred_Tx: I just remembered. There was a fellow on EBay a few weeks back who had an NOS 67 Olds 98 hood. It did not sell, so you might try emailing him. He has been putting quite a few 67 Olds 98 parts up. His prices are too high, but since it did not sell maybe you could contact him and make a deal. Here is a like to an auction he currently has. Use it to get his contact info:

(if the link doesn't work, do a search for "oldsmobile rockers")

Good luck.

That was the understatement of the century. The 88 convertible quarters were even worse than the hood.

Originality Plus is another one to watch out for. Their ebay prices and opening bids are ludicrous, and I never see anything they list sell. But they have outrageously positive feedback, so someone who doesn't mind being raped is buying it.

Don't get me wrong. I'll pay a fair price for anything, but I'm not gonna let someone grow wealthy off me, esp since I know what these parts are realistically worth. I also know what most of these guys have paid for their NOS pieces. I've cleaned out a few dealer attics meself.

The big trouble is, if one of them gets that price, that's what they'll all ask for it. I laughed in a guy's face at Carlisle last week when he told me $200 for a 1974 Oldsmobile color and fabric book that was missing the paint chips. Dream on, bubba- even Bob Johnson won't dare to ask that much for a complete one.

A little far north, but anyone out in the North West, if they need parts or a complete 67-98 convertible, I want $500US. Has a 71-455(don't know if it runs), auto tranny, posi rear, power bench, tilt/tele, lots of good straight panel and some very good chrome. Its all in that great old saffron yellow.
