Is there a difference in the power window motors between the convertibles and coupes? Seems like the part numbers were different. Thanks

Does anyone have definitive instructions for doing an R&R of a power window motor? Looks like a bear of a job, and I'm preparing to do the passenger's side on my car...

I have good used window motors and I alway sell the regulator with the motor so you don't have to get involved with the spring. Simply drill out the rivets that hold the whole mechanism to the door and replace the whole assembly. I can be reached at jfinn@cpinternet.com

Haven't worked on my car ('89) in awhile, but I've got both doors torn down. I have a window motor for the passenger's side. And I have an '88 manual. Still haven't found any good diagram of where to drill a hole to put a bolt to save my arm from being cut off. Any pointers as to where I might find it, where to look, or where to drill/aim? Seems like it would take some real magic to get something in the door first before tearing it apart further. High time to get this puppy back on the road! Any help would be much appreciated.

A little tip on removing the window regulator. Five (5) rivets are aluminum with steel centers. Punch out the steel pin center with a drift and hammer before you drill the soft aluminum, makes life a LOT easier.

Four of these rivets are in a 4" square pattern; the 5th is off towards the mirror by about 20". Numbers are out of my head; YMMV.

Having just done one a week ago, I can understand your confusion. It isn't altogether clear, even with the FSM, until you go through the process. It isn't necessary to bolt the regulator together until you remove the regulator and motor assembly from the car. You will need to immobilize the mechanism before you remove the motor from the regulator, but you can do that on the bench. Drill and bolt (or wire, clamp)the part of the regulator that the motor is attached to to the sector gear immediately below it so the two parts that are under spring pressure cannot move. Then replace the motor. Once that is done, you can free up the regulator and replace the assembly in the door.

Ah ha! That's the kinda info I was lookin' for!

Sounds like it might not be half as bad as I had feared. I had visions of some sort of guillotine-like affair that I would have to disarm befor extracting from the door. This I can handle. Just a mere bunch of minor cuts and slices up my arm to look forward to, as with any other Reatta door-related maintenance.

Now I just have install the window motor in the passenger's door, reinstall the replacement door handle in the driver's door after I replace the stud I stripped out of it (and epoxy it in with some PC7 or JB-Weld <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> ), adjust the mechanism to not break it like it did the original, install the trunk-full of brake-parts that have been waiting patiently for my attention, and get this thing back on the road...
