Proposal for an "In Memoriam" forum section.

Recommended Posts

This is a serious and somber post and I hope it is taken as such:

This is a sad and difficult topic to broach, but after this week of posts reporting the passing of thee more well known and sorely missed old car hobbyists and probably other active but lesser known not reported, maybe the forum administrators might consider the addition of an "In Memoriam" forum section to collect and organize announcements and tributes to these revered folks. This proposed forum could include others involved in the automotive industries from nationally known collectors, designers, race car drivers, restorers, and any associated figures, and might include brief biography or synopsis of their contributions.

This is just a suggestion and not an easy one to make, but I feel that it would add a tone of respect to the memories of those who have passed on.

P.S.   Current demographics of the hobby as we know it, place most members well into in the 60 and older range, and many into their 80's.

With another generation coming up, memories of these older people need to be better documented.

Sure, separate section fior memorials is ok, but not to the exclusion of news items.

I would definitely agree that this would be a good idea!

Several other forums I am on have them & they seem to work well. Yes the whole idea is depressing, but death is a fact of life. Being able to click on a thread about a gentleman that you knew once in a while to bring back memories would be nice.

God Bless

I run a niche forum covering a competitive hobby and for over a decade have had a section called 'The Eternal Podium' where threads about notable hobby figures who have pased away are placed. Is it depressing... yes, but it is a celebration as well.

A lot of forums have a section where new members are asked to post to introduce themselves. "The Eternal Podium" is the place where we say goodbye.

I think it is a great idea, but there needs to be some sort of confirmation of the information, not just hearsay, which could be more work for someone. I was at an outing up in the Bronx on Saturday with my Union that I retired from and there was a bit of a mix up with some one who said to be deceased and wasn't, (brothers in this case) and photo was placed of the wrong person, and the wrong photo of a person who had the same name of another who was still alive. (It was a real common Irish name, but...)

The announcement of a fellow car guys passing should be posted in the General Section for a time to be determined (maybe three days) and then moved to a specific section created for memorials and those should never be deleted!

I don't look at the names on headstones as I am driving by, because my eyes are on the road!

God bless,

Im not in favor of an "In Memoriam" forum.

The general forum gives topics the most exposure.

Buried their own forum they would get lost.

That is because people don't read the forum correctly using the "unread content" button.

Even our club (Rose City Model T Club) has a list of members that have passed right in the front of the roster.

While not in front, Dodge Brothers Club and Model T Ford Club of America magazines have a list of members that have passed away recently.

Well, when I die, I'm not going to tell anyone, and I'm not going to post it in a general category next to a carburetor problem!

Then there is the "security" issue too. I did not think of that when posting recently about my friend Neil. I was asked to remove the post by his daughter. Sad, but that's the time we live in today.

Pretty optimistic thinking you will still have control over these things when you pass on.

Don't the moderators work for the membership? They exist to prevent things getting unruly or abusive and out of hand. The democratic process should come into play and since there seems to be more than enough support then it needs to be done even if a moderator(s) wants to be against it - it is not actually their forum after all it is ours!

Come on guys in charge create the sub forum being asked for! - If in doubt conduct a poll and majority wins.

This thread seems to be fading away, but I wanted to share one link to a thread in my "Eternal Podium" subforum at Slotblog.net. Please read the posts made to it.

If you don't think this sort of subforum is worth doing, so be it.

That was really nice, sir. Thank you for sharing a fine example!

With the obvious support from membership for this subforum, there is no reason it should not be added. Not only would it be a celebration of life for each particular gentleman, but in a small way it would help the healing process for his forum friends who could not attend any kind of funeral in person. As I stated earlier, one could go back months/years later to read nd remember their friend anytime they wanted. Besides...There are already a "buttload" of subforums, so one more could not possibly be a burden.

God bless,

As an aside to this discussion, I have a suggestion.  I hope to miniate it for mine.

Task someone with notifying the forum when one passes.  I plan to leave instructions to one or both my sons to do so.  Logon and pass word.  Then we are not left wondering  "wonder what happened to " as we mostly are now.

As in,  wonder about F&J!  Have not seen Frank here or the HAMB for awhile.

Now at almost 78 years young, I read the Great Race web site and see great guys I raced against, now gone.   As a "Young Gun" in the 80's & 90's

I admired all the older guys still racing and being competitive into their 70's.   Reading of them crossing the final finish line without the fanfare

of finishing the Great Race, gives me chance to remember them and the times we shared this great journey of life.  Often I think back to those

races,  and wonder what they did following their Great Adventures.   I took up touring with AACA & the VMCCA on Glidden Tours, Sentimental,

Founders and Regional Tours and met many more wondrful antique car people.  Some of those folks are gone now too, but I can know of that due

to my regular stops right here at the AACA Forums.  The new thread will replace the need to read all the specialized Forums.
