Von Tiergarten Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 (edited) Hi guys My 1947 torpedo straight eight is fouling sparks (1,2 and 7,8). Any idea why only “the outer” plugs are doing this? Edited August 16, 2023 by Von Tiergarten Wrong year (see edit history)
Bloo Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 I don't know, but I am pretty sure a 1948 Eight has a 2 barrel carburetor. Maybe trouble on one side? Maybe a vacuum leak? 1
PONTIAC1953 Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 Bloo was in the ballpark, the outer intake ports that feed fuel to 1,2,7,8 is running too rich a fuel/air mixture. 1
Von Tiergarten Posted August 17, 2023 Author Posted August 17, 2023 Problem solved. I disassembled the carburetor and found a nozzle “force fitted” in there by the previous owner 🤦♂️ With a little love - it now runs well, and without fouling the “outer” plugs. Perhaps running a little leaner will help fuel economy. 3
Von Tiergarten Posted August 22, 2023 Author Posted August 22, 2023 Still the plugs look nice and clean (perhaps too clean?!?) so cylinder 1,2,7,8 do fire and burn the carbon - but now a new problem (or two) showed its ugly face. A massive hesitation during acceleration and “stuttering” above 45mph. Time to take off the carb again.
