ki0 Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 (edited) hello ! i have a 1990 tC with the 3.0l v6 in it and have a very confusing problem with it, the car starts perfectly fine but after it warms up the RPMs will drop/stutter a few times then car will turn off, if i turn it back on the only way to keep it running is revving it from anywhere from 1500-3000 rpm and after a few minutes of erratic rpm fluctuation it will eventually stabilize and run fine, after that there are no issues with rpms or it stopping or anything like that. its very inconsistent though, if i let the car stay off after the initial shut off for about 5-10 minutes and then turn it back on it will start fine and stay running fine (sometimes) and some days (very rarely) the entire problem wont occur at all. It only does so after its been sitting for a while (2-3+ hours) Ive talked to a few mechanics about it and some say it could be a sensor problem or a fuel air mixture problem but im not exactly sure, ive also heard it could be a vacuum leak of some kind but im very new to working on cars as this is my first one so im not very sure at all. figured this might be a good place to ask so any and all help/suggestions would be so very much appreciated (i hope my terminology makes sense, i can send vids of the RPM gauge when the problem occurs if that would help!) ki0 Posted March 5, 2023 Author Posted March 5, 2023 edit: just got fault codes from engine, 12 54 25 55, as far as i can tell 12 is related to my battery dying a while ago and 55 means there are no more codes to display, but: -25 Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) motor driver circuit shorted or target idle not reached, vacuum leak found -54 camshaft sensor/distributor timing (7) are these the correct meanings of each code?
Hemi Dude Posted March 6, 2023 Posted March 6, 2023 Have you tried cleaning the Throttle Body? Remember, all drivability problems are not caused by a mechanical or electrical problem, some times it is just a need for a little normal maintenance. Oh, you might not know that cleaning the throttle body is part of maintenance? Most people don't. After 33 years of operation, it might just need that. Even if it had been done once or twice along the way, that may still be more than 10 years ago.
