Sealant on headbolts for 1953 Pontiac 268 straight eight

Hi   I am going to change the head gasket on my 1953 Pontiac 268 engine.

shall I use sealant on the headbolts?

 IF they protrude into the water jacket.   Otherwise , no.

If they go through the water jacket coat the bolts with copper grease and use copper flat washers.

On the Cadillac Flatheads, all the head bolts go into the water jacket and Permatex Form a Gasket 2 is the recommended sealant. I've used it on my LaSalle (Cadillac) engine head bolts with great success. With sealed threads, no copper flat washers are needed unless the body of the bolt passes through a water jacket.
