John DePrey Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 Just curious whether there are any 37 Stude hearse owners on here that know whether theirs is a Superior or Bender or other coach body, with a body label/tag to back it up. It's pure curiosity, I have a 37 Stude Superior ad pic depicting these "carved" panels but the owner of this rare set claims they are for a Bender bodied 37. thanks
(S) Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 I would think even way back then, they had a tag or ID somewhere... Google Studebaker hearse bender body and there is some info out there. I know later cars, trucks and buses had 'Superior' tags . Sometimes in more than one place.

I know Superior was doing them, i have a photo of an ad promoting one with these panels. The hearse expert with the panels claims Bender but hasn't provided any substantiation. An ASC member believes his 37 is Bender but now is second guessing that, and he plans to look. For me the quest is purely academic.
(S) Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 If the build sheet is available, it should say ' chassis, ship to Bender ?? Also in the parts book it may give a listing for the Studebaker part of it. The bender ID may just be more difficult. The build sheet for Daves bus says ship to Superior. ( 1950 ) Truck chassis only for busses were called ' A 1 ' A cab and chassis was A2 Cars were probably similar with way different body tags.

nzcarnerd Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Here in NZ there is a 1937 Studebaker President Superior hearse which was apparently imported new. It has been restored and is working in the industry for which it was intended. I don't have a good photo of it unfortunately.
