I have moved from the HVAC system temporarily on my 63 and have been toiling with prepping for new paint (which I sprayed yesterday). My car has power vent windows, which open and close when the appropriate switches are pushed. I guess this is one of those first world problems, but the vents don't quite close enough when they hit their stop. I can push them closed by hand, but since I have the door skins off it makes sense to adjust them now, if that is possible. I guess I could somehow rig them to close all the way, or just live with it. What do you think?

Sounds like the gear is worn. The worm gear on the motor shaft is wearing the gear. If you get a replacement be sure it is softer metal than the motor shaft worm. They were designed to fail as yours has.  Which saves the motor shaft worm.  Years ago they made aftermarket gears out of steel and they ruined a lot of worms.

make them work!  A rare accessory, and fun to operate for the show crowd.  I added them to my Dad's car, got the plates from Gene and had them rechromed.  They may have a problem overcoming the rubber seal and that is why they do not close all of the way, you could try lubricating the seal with silicone GREASE and see if it makes a difference, if not it is easy to remove the door skin and re sequence the gear

Let us know after you’ve changed out the gears. I think you’ll find the the old one is made of pot metal and the last tooth on the gear has broken off. No gear to engage for that last closing distance.

The new gears I replaced in mine were brass, old gears were worn.

I have yet to install replacements that I purchased recently from CARS. They appear brass and are non magnetic. Happy to have them, was worried they would be unavailable as Hydro-E-Lectric no longer lists them. Were they the only manufacturer?

Will post the condition of old gears when I get to it.

HURRY!

On the subject of Power Vents, I have yet to locate a replacement chrome power control panel for the Driver's Armrest.

I know they are usually decrepit being exposed to the elements and smokers. But, as you can see how my broken piece has excellent chrome, I know there must be a good specimen out there for me to purchase.

I have purchased many long distance parts in the past that were not fit for use. Chrome is not photogenic. So, at the mercy of the Seller to describe the part. I found this piece from 3 providers and they honestly recommended I keep looking. Their pieces were not worth the trouble of money transfer and shipping.

Re-chroming a rough piece is not an option for reasons of no facility near me, a die-cast piece and then there's that ribbed surface. Difficulty = $$$ after purchasing a rough piece.

Anyone have this Panel to sell? TX

I think if you’ll look at the back side of the control panel for a car that is not equipped with power vents, you’ll find the bosses for the screws that hold the vent window switches in place. Might be able to cut out the hole for power vent switches.

Correct Ed!

Ot seems the guy I purchased car from had some idea of going from standard to custom armrests…just another unfinished project! Anyway don’t expect these are condition X frame is looking for. Also the switches have been pulled apart and when I devote some time to cleaning and reassemble..

Thanks Ed, Like anything "Riviera", I given this much thought and this suggestion has been brought forth before.

I ordered a Dremel cut-off disc kit for my dye grinder to do exactly that, cut out the opening. It took 4 weeks during which I noticed my local Home Depot has them. Anywho, My non-pwr vent window panel - GONE! It's been 2years and it ain't gonna show. Not mentioning any names but, someone in my household hates old cars and she (oops) won't be caught dead riding in my Riviera!😁

Sorry to hear John.  Maybe you can throw out one shoe from her favourite pair and see what happens! 🙄

Just as a follow up to my original question, I finally got around to addressing this problem with the vent windows that would not close all the way. I followed the suggestions from the other members and ended up replacing the gears on the motors. They were shot. Turns out it was an easy repair, but one that I would have struggled with if the forum did not exist. Thanks!

Tom

PS  Be ready for some A/C questions. I have been putting this job off, but strangely enough, it isn't fixing itself.
