W Ranard
The nut in the photo has cracks and needs to be replaced. I am looking for information on what others have done to replace these nuts. The nut is 1-7/16 inch across the flats and the ball is 1-1/8 inch diameter. Although I am not sure of the original material, it appears to be a machined casting. Are these nuts available anywhere? I can have it machined out of 1045 (not heat treated) but am not sure if this will stand up. Any help will be appreciated.
dibarlaw
Wes: It does look like a custom machining job to me.
alsfarms
What does the socket end look like? Where do you want the wear, on the ball or the socket? The answer to that question should dictate the material and heat treat you use on the ball end. Well lubricated socket, will minimize wear, the use a heat treated 4140 or near equivalent material with heat treat for strength. Al

Mark Shaw
You might start with one of these off the shelf parts. Model T Tie rod yoke ball, straight shaft, 2721A (modeltford.com)
pre10
Looks like early Rambler, I made some of those years ago, steel was 8620 and them hardened to about 45-50 Rockwell. Too bad I did not make extras.
W Ranard
Pre10 - Did you make the ball or the nut? I am wondering about the nut. Thanks.
