Bill Corbett
Hello, I'm new to this site, so I’m hoping I haven’t repeated something I should’ve seen. We are in the process of trying to get my fathers ‘38 Darby back into proper running condition, and have recently run into the ignition (red) warning light glowing brighter as rpm increases. The vehicle is a negative ground, and we tried to polarize the dynamo/generator. The amp gauge shows a negative of about 1-2, with lights off, when running, and about -14 to -16 when the headlights are turned on while running. The amp meter also shows a “tick” to the negative about every 2-3 seconds while the car is at idle. We are getting 13-14 volts at the battery terminals, and the car runs well for extended periods of time w no issues other than the glowing ignition light. It’s the negative on the amp meter that concerns me, as well as the increased brightness on the ignition switch. We have no known shorts, and the brushes in the dynamo ( and, the windings) look very good. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will redo the videos I have of the glowing light, and try to reload as soon as possible.
HarryLime
A longshot suggestion: ensure the generator is well grounded to the engine. I found a later model not charging and discovered the generator was mounted in phenolic bushings . It simply took a bonding ground wire gen. to engine .
Bill Corbett
Sounds good. I’ll give it a try when I get back. Thank you!
