48 Chrysler NewYorker oil filter canister

Recommended Posts

My streight 8 engine oil filter canister has a nut on the top of the oil filter canister cover

that is tightened down after a new filter is installed. As this nut is tightened down,

it forces a copper or brass washer down over the top stem of the oil filter cap to

seal the top of the cap. No matter what I do, oil leaks out of the bottom of the

nut around the copper/brass washer.

Anyone know how to stop the oil leaks???

Gary:

I don't have an answer for you right off, but I'm pretty sure I know who would.

Remove the canister from your car, and take it first to a machine shop where the machinist could probably look at it and tell you what is worn and how to machine new sealing washers and, more importantly, sealing surfaces for it.

Secondly, any place that repairs old tractors and fork lifts will have dealt with a lot of this. Equipment doesn't go out of style like cars do with the public, and it's very, very common for 50-year-old tractors to be repaired and restored for actual use. Tractors and fork lifts are also loaded with hydraulic components, and the guys who repair them know how to deal with leaks under pressure.

Good luck, and tell us if this advice gets you the answer you need.
