Rear axle removal and inspection

Recommended Posts

recently purchased this 29 Plymouth, after pulling wheel and drum noticed a large degree of old  grease/oil mix draining from axle. Not sure if from over greasing or oil seal leaking, or both.  Just reviewed how to pull axle shaft for 29 Chrysler which make sense but dont know what to do if old seal is BO.  Discussion said you will destroy old seal getting it out.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are not a member of the Plymouth club you should join.  It will save you money and it list seal suppliers.   There is a good chance the seals need replaced due to its age but also the previous owner could have over greased it.   On the outside bottom of the axle housing you will find two grease fittings that grease the wheel bearings.  If over greased  will come through the outside seal.  It is not a hard problem to solve.  These cars were well built for a low priced car and will run all day long at 45MPH

Pull the axles. Measure the locations. Bearings and seals are easy to find.
As far as grease, the guidance on the day was probably grease it every 500-1000 miles. So probably there is a lot due to that.

the manual likely says the differential uses ‘fluid gear lubricant’ - researching that it was straight 50 weight.
