maok
Tom, if its anything like a '28 Chrysler 6, then the whole tappet assembly needs to be removed from the side of the engine.
ArticiferTom
Not sure what you mean . I backed off adjustment enough to have tappet not touching cam surface . Took a pry bar bump to move the little I got . Now moves easily back forth 3/16" Do not need to pull valves so am leaving head on . In process of cleaning oil galley system . maok
I am not familiar with a '31 Ply 4 cylinder, can you snap a pic of it? Most likely the journal of the cam is making contact with a tappet. Edited July 14, 2022 by maok (see edit history)
ArticiferTom
I was checking that as I turned cam by hand . Pic of valve with right half back off and drawing of engine .
maok
I should have said tappet not valve, I have edited my previous post. Its different to the '28 Chrysler 6.
maok
Have you tried holding all the tappets up as high as they go, maybe clothes line pegs will keep them up.
ArticiferTom
Yes , they are ty-rap to above cam lobes . Going to try a few more thing tomorrow one is vacuuming channel . Maybe debris hang up . Looks like center lobe on drawing as groove . I was concerned was missing a clip or set screw some where . Will post results .

maok
One more suggestion from me, did you remove the oil pump/distributor drive from the cam?
ArticiferTom
Yes oil pump and fuel pump removed . The distributor is driven off gear in front of cam gear . I did not remove that .
ArticiferTom
Jack M is the Winner it was center bearing hitting edge of valve . I used a dowel against temple to hear knock . Located to center , where could not see . ( insert happy dance ) . Got to get valve compressor tomorrow and raise it more . Also got upper main shell half out . Need to layout and have grooves machine in them now . Thanks all .
