David_Leech
1928 Standard Six What is the maintenance on the universal joints? I'm not even sure that's what these are to be honest. How does this even work? Are these flex discs?
Alan Cutler
Ball & Trunnion, maybe ? https://www.google.com/search?q=ball+and+trunnion+type+universal+joint&rlz=1C9BKJA_enUS902US902&oq=ball+and+tru&aqs=chrome.0.0i512j69i57j0i512l4.7827j0j7&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=Pl5SyiJdwzqM8M
auburnseeker
If it's a ball and trunnion it should have a dust cover on it as you wouldn't want dirt getting in where the balls ride.
David_Leech
Is there any maintenance on this? Does anyone have pictures of what their driveshaft setup looks like?
David_Leech
On further inspection, I'm not sure it is a ball and trunnion. It looks like a ujoint turned inside out. Instead of being driven by a cross through the center of the yokes, the yokes are in the center and the ujoint surrounds them, driven by the ring. David_Leech
There are two screws, are these for lubricant?
Kenendcindyc
There called Mechanics U joints. They are filled with oil. You turn the joint till one plug is high and one is low. Fill with gear oil threw the lower plug till it comes out the top one. Pump it in with a pistol grip oil can.
David_Leech
I think this is similar to what I'm dealing with. It is the only posting I can find so far https://www.1916simplex.com/post/restoration-of-the-driveline
Pete K.
I take both filler screws out, pump straight STP oil treatment in upper hole, when you see clean lube coming out lower hole, close that up and fill upper 'till it's full. replace upper filler screw. Some old autos had a leather boot wired onto the universal to keep dirt out. Many are missing.
