Maximum Tire Temperatures

Recommended Posts

What is the max acceptable tire temperatures for modern tires? I recently saw 130-150 degrees on my trailer tire treads while moving a heavy car in 100-degree weather. No trouble, just checking. Thanks.

For trailer tires, I think 130*F is about the max I'm comfortable with--on the hottest days.  I often find a 10-12* difference between the sunny side and the shady side of the trailer at rest stops.  I check hub temp, sidewall temp, and tread temp on each wheel.  My experience is that if a given tire is running perhaps 20* hotter than other(s) on the same side of the trailer, it may be an indication of either (1) a loading/weight distribution issue or (2) early warning of tread separation.

Nobody blows up tires from too much pressure. On the other hand underinflation is the most common cause of blowouts. I'm not suggesting running over the max (although it would still be better than running too low).

It sure helps to pay attention to tire pressure, and that goes double on hot days.
