MochetVelo
Here is an unusual stack of screw heads and nuts on my 2-cylinder, 1911 Renault. They plug an access hole to access the front piston. I'm wondering about the round one with four slots. I might find the tool for this if I knew what it is called! Phil
JACK M
Looks like the last guy used a pipe wrench or vice grips.
MochetVelo
Yes, I would probably have used pliers, also. However, the hex bolt below it removed the whole unit revealing a threaded, tapered plug covered in black carbon soot. The hole itself allows a rod to be used to determine TDC (top dead center of piston) and set the spark timing. I'm assuming the taper seals the top of the cylinder. DFeeney
I would think a common Spanner Wrench would fit your bolt head. They only use two slots at a time ( 180 degrees apart). Measure the distance across the top of the bolt head between the slots and this would give you a basic size. I would put the bolt in a drill press ( I have no Lathe) and clean it up using fine emery paper. Look on E-bay for used Spanner wrenches. Interesting car you have. intimeold
Yes, a spanner wrench, is needed here. They come in small sizes too. Leave the vise grips in the tool box. intimeold
Bhigdog
Leave it to the the Frogs and the Brits to come up with ersatz fasteners. Start with what looks to be a 3/8" (or so) socket. It, and about 5 minutes, with your bench grinder and.......Voila....near instant spanner..............Bob Edited May 5, 2022 by Bhigdog (see edit history)
PartsAncient
Bhigdog's recommendation is right on. I have done the same sort of thing. We often use an electric or pneumatic tool with a 3" abrasive cut-off wheel for cutting slots such as those.
