1937hd45
I hope that date does not conflict with the World War II Weekend at the Reading,Pa. Airport. We went to Reading last year for the first time, and plan to make it an annual trip from now on. It is a living memorial to all that served in WWII. ronbarn
A little trivia here -The story goes that President Eisenhower was flying some where (don't know destination and not sure of year but I think it was after he left the White House and noticed his backup pilot reading an issue of Antique Automobile magazine. He expressed his interest and they talked about antique vehicles. Upon their return the pilot contacted the Gettysburg Region, AACA, and Eisenhower was made an honorary region member. But there was a problem - to be a member of a region, even an honorary member, the individual must also be a member of AACA national. While pondering the problem of telling the President of the US that he could not be an honorary member unless he sent AACA a membership form with dues, it was noticed that the AACA total membership was around 4900 plus. Clever solution - President Eisenhower was sent a membership certificate and was officially member #5000. Don't know if he ever paid dues, but his AACA Membership Certificate hangs on the wall of the Eisenhower Library. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Dynaflash8
Sounds like a lot of fun. Heck, we could have a sock hop! Those were good days, the mid 1950s. My wife worked for the Eisenhower re-election in '56 and still has a big pin that says Back Ike, Re-elect Broyhill. Joel Broyhill was our local US Representative. I hadn't met her yet; as our family was backing Stevenson and not Broyhill. <grin> The Government employee pay raises weren't too good in those days under Ike either (while I was dating my wife after high school), but it was a good time to be a teenager. 1937hd45
There is a photo of President Eisenhower in his mother-in law's 1914 Rauch & Lang Electric during the 1952 campaign in Denver. I wonder if he was the first President to use an Antique Auto?
Guest DeSoto Frank
1937HD45,Sounds like Ike was very "forward-thinking": campaiging from an "alternative- fuel vehicle" way back in '52 ! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
