21 Light Six Spark and Throttle questions

Recommended Posts

Trying to figure out how all the control rods are connected etc. Are the small levers that connect to the control rods for spark and throttle on the driver's side supposed to face up or down? Right now, the way I have it, the foot throttle pedal seems to counteract the direction of the hand throttle on the steering sector (I am assuming that spark is retarded and throttle is at its lowest when both sector arms on the steering wheel are at the top like in the photo  Can someone post photos of the correct orientation of rods and connectors on both sides including carburetor rod Please??? Thanks in advance!190792532_IMG_20220311_1415384941.jpg.2fa416b1e42365547cff20b7ca9471ef.jpg

You have the quadrant/levers in the right location. Longer lever is the throttle - down is idle. Shorter lever is spark advance - down is retard, up is advance. Looks like a left hand drive car, aluminum head and I'll assume distributor equipped as I see a modern coil....so, your 1921 will be set up the same as my 1923. This should give you want you need but let me know if you need actual photos. It looks like the rods attached to the base of the steering column are improperly bent. Both rods are supposed to be bent exactly the same and are installed with the bends at opposite ends as seen in the diagram. I think I have a spare if you need a template. It also looks like your starter motor is installed upside down.

Thanks - I will have to look this over tomorrow - Very helpful! I should be able to get a handle on it from the diagrams.

But - when you say the starter motor is installed upside down - not sure what you mean.  I had it rebuilt a year ago by Precision Power and just pulled it out this week - never got a chance to look at it before due to illness. It does turn the motor over in the right direction . . .

While I am on a roll - where do the clips in this photo go?

There were direct drive starters and gear reduction starters. You have a gear reduction starter. When installing the motor to the starter bendix drive housing, the motor should sit below that housing. Yours is clocked to sit above. It’ll still turn in the right direction but will be in the way of the steering wheel control rods that you are trying to make right.

Compare picture below to your starter.

Again - very grateful for the help. The starter motor (on cursory examination), appears that it will hit the steering sector housing if turned down but I am going to give it a go. I will keep you posted!

On the control rods, I agree that the large bend seems unwieldy and that turning the motor down makes sense, however, the Light Six service manual has a picture (2M) that appears to show the throttle rod very bent like mine - any thoughts on this?1095297092_IMG_20220312_1255144251.jpg.ca388fafb5c6bc5ac89558b902b25c18.jpg

I forgot that they changed the sector in 1922 so what I sent you earlier is for 1922-1923 and does not apply. Here is the correct one for your car and a picture of another 1921 that may help. I can't guarantee that 1921 is correct as that car has several items cobbled but it looks correct in that area (although one rod is not connected).

Cool -thanks a bunch.  Going to go play now . . . I will update on progress once I have something!

What literature has these great diagrams?

The illustrated parts manuals. A few folks have them but they are not too plentiful and no one has reproduced them for sale.
