Jeff Spear
Hello, I thought I would start a new thread about parts sourcing rather than include this in the main restoration thread. As I move forward on my hupmobile rebuild I have found that dodge 218 flathead pistons can be used. I looks as if the only modification would be to enlarge the small end of the rod about.060 to accept the larger pin of the dodge pistons. The price and availability of the pistons and good selection of over-sizes make this seem like a good choice I have seen a number of cars that appear to have these pistons in pictures where the engine is apart. Are there any downsides to be aware of?
Steve Hughes
I have heard of using the Dodge pistons as well, and someone mentioned Chrysler so I imagine that they are the same piston. I have a friend with a Model 20 with the Dodge pistons and he seems quite happy with the results. Steve
PMac
Jeff, I have no direct experience here but am told that my engine was rebuilt with Plymouth pistons. Perhaps the Mopar pistons are of similar design? Wish I could be of more help. Cheers, Peter
Jeff Spear
Thanks guys, The pistons are often listed as Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth so all the same it seems. I am going to order a set in a few days and should have them soon so I will share the results I just need to measure my bores closer to be sure I get a large enough oversize. Your feedback helps to confirm that this is something that has been done more than once.
