2022 AACA Grand Nationals

The 2021 car season is almost over.  It’s time to begin planning to attend the 2022 Grand Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA, on Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21, 2022.  Detailed information will be posted on the Tidewater Region website (www.traaca.com) soon, but here’s some general information for now:

HOST REGION:  Tidewater Region

WHEN:  Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21, 2022

WHERE:  Virginia Beach, VA

HOST HOTEL:  The Founders Inn (Hilton Tapestry Collection) located on the grounds of Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA.  You can make reservations now at 757-366-5700.  Ask for the AACA Grand National rate.

ALTERNATE HOTEL:  Delta Hotel (Marriott), Chesapeake, VA (4 miles from host hotel).  You can make reservations now at 757-523-1500.  Ask for the AACA Grand National rate.

The Tidewater Region is planning a great show with a lot of fun activities (and delicious food) for you to enjoy.  Both the host hotel and the primary alternate hotel have beautiful rooms, their own restaurant and bar, are near other local and national chain restaurants and shopping, and are just off I-64.  Plus, there are plenty of fun and historic places to explore in Virginia Beach and nearby Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Suffolk, Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.  Make a vacation of it:  come to win your antique vehicle’s well-deserved Grand National Award, but come a few days early and stay a few days after to visit the beach and explore the local area.

Check the Tidewater Region website (www.traaca.com) in a few days for more information.  If you have questions before then, please contact the 2022 Grand Nationals Chairperson—Marion McAlpine—at the email: AGN2022CHAIR@gmail.com.

Thanks Marion,

I have been looking forward to this since you and Mark first told me of your plans for this over a year, maybe 2 years ago.  I made my reservation at The Founders Inn. 😉 Again, thanks to you, Mark and your AACA TR Region for doing this event. I am sure it will be a great show with good friends and that is what it is all about.

Hello Bill,

You need to call the hotel direct at the number in my original post.  Yes, all the rooms are blocked for the show--we have the entire hotel.  I just met with the hotel yesterday and rooms were still available.  However, rooms are filling quickly, so call soon.

Happy Thanksgiving!  Mark & I look forward to seeing you at the Grand Nationals.

For those coming to the 2022 Grand Nationals in Virginia Beach, consider arriving a few days early or staying a few days after the show to explore the area.  Both the Founders Inn (the host hotel) and the Delta Hotel (the first alternate hotel--others will be added as necessary) are offering the same group rate for rooms three days before and three days after the show.

There are a lot of fun and interesting things to do in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area:

- In Virginia Beach you can go to the beachfront and visit the ocean (before tourist seasons really kicks in and it gets crowded); visit the Virginia Aquarium, Military Aviation Museum (the largest collection in the world of flyable World War I and World War II military aircraft and where the Tidewater Region hosted the 2015 AACA Eastern Spring Meet), Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Cape Henry Lighthouse; visit, hike the walking trails, and see the wildlife in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, False Cape State Park, or First Landing State Park.  Catch a world-class show or concert at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.  Or just kick back and enjoy the amenities of The Founders Inn & Spa, have delicious meals at the Founders Inn Swan Terrace Restaurant, and venture out to explore the many shops and other many great restaurants and microbreweries elsewhere in Virginia Beach.

- In Chesapeake (where the Delta Hotel is located) visit the Great Bridge Battlefield (from the American Revolutionary War) & Waterways Museum, parts of the Virginia Civil War Trail, or the Chesapeake African American Heritage Trail. Chesapeake also has many great restaurants and microbreweries to try and interesting local shops to visit.

- In Norfolk visit the USS Wisconsin battleship and Nauticus Maritime Center, the MacArthur Memorial (which contains General Douglas MacArthur's historical collection and papers, and he and his wife Jean are buried there--Jean was from Norfolk), the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, Virginia Zoo, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, etc. Catch a world-class show or concert at Chrysler Hall, Scope Auditorium, or Wells Theater, a concert at the historic Attucks Theater, or a Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles affiliate) AAA baseball game at Harbor Park.  Take a boat tour of Norfolk Naval Base and see aircraft carriers, amphibious carriers, destroyers, guided-missile cruisers, and submarines from the water. And did I mention that Norfolk also has some great restaurants, microbreweries, and shops to explore?

- In Portsmouth, catch a concert at the nTelos Amphitheater. Visit the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, Children's Museum of Virginia, Hofler Creek Wildlife Preserve, Lightship Portsmouth Museum, Railroad Museum of Virginia, Paradise Creek Nature Park, or many other historic sites. Catch a movie on the big screen and enjoy dinner at the restored 1945 Art Deco Commodore Theater. And guess what? Portsmouth has some great restaurants and shops, too.

- Hampton, Newport News, and Suffolk are just short drives away.

-- In Hampton, visit Buckroe Beach & Park, the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe and the Fort Monroe National Monument, Hampton Roads Air and Space Center, Hampton Air Park, Hampton History Museum, or Sandy Bottom Nature Park. Catch a concert at Hampton Coliseum. And Hampton has some great restaurants and shops to visit.

-- In Newport News, visit the Virginia Living Museum, Virginia Military Museum, U.S. Army Transportation Museum, or the Mariners Museum & Park (with the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor Center, the official repository for the NOAA Monitor Collection including the turret from the ship and a full-scale replica of the ship). Stroll through scenic Newport News Park (or play a round of Frisbee golf). Visit the Peninsula Fire Arts Center. Catch a world-class show or concert at the Ferguson Center. And yes, they have some great restaurants, microbreweries, and shops.

-- In Suffolk visit historic Riddick's Folly House Museum, the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum, the Planters Peanut Center (yes, Suffolk is the home of Planters Peanuts), or the scenery and wildlife at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refugee. And guess what?  Suffolk has some great restaurants, microbreweries, and shops.

 - Finally, historic Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg are about an hour's drive away.  Visit and learn more about the founding of our country.

There will be flyers about many of these places to visit at the host hotel and in the goody bags for those with vehicles registered for the show.  If you want suggestions on places to eat, good microbreweries, museums or shops to visit, talk to  our volunteers in the Hospitality Room or any member of the Tidewater Region.

As I said at the beginning of this long post, come enjoy the Grand Nationals but take advantage of the discounted group room rates and come early or stay late to explore the area.  We can't wait to see you (and your antique vehicle) at the show this May.

Do you like ice cream?  Do you like ice cream served in fresh-made waffle cones?  If so, join your AACA friends for the 2022 Grand Nationals Ice Cream Social being held at the host hotel—The Founders Inn—on Thursday evening, 19 May 2022.  Enjoy delicious ice cream waffle cones made right in front of you by Norfolk’s famous Doumar’s Barbecue, inventors of the waffle cone.  (Abe Doumar created & sold the first waffle cones at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, MO.)  Toppings will be available for those who prefer to have a bowl of ice cream and make their own sundae.  Tickets are $10/person.  (You need to purchase the tickets when you preregister for the show.  Tickets will not be sold at the show.)  The Tidewater Region looks forward to seeing you there!

there!

The host hotel (The Founders Inn & Spa) for the 2022 AACA Grand Nationals is sold out.  (It is maintaining a limited waiting list in case anyone cancels their reservation.)

A limited number of rooms are still available at the primary host hotel—the Delta Hotel in nearby Chesapeake, VA.  The Delta Hotel is only 4 miles away (it is off the next freeway exit) from The Founders Inn and is located near plenty of dining and shopping opportunities.  Make your room reservation today either by calling the hotel at (757) 523-1500 or using this weblink:  Book Your Group Rate | Marriott International.  Remember to ask for the AACA group rate (automatically done if you use the weblink), which is $124/night plus taxes.  The hotel is extending these rates for three days before and three days after the show so you can stay longer and enjoy the many interesting and fun things to do and see in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

We expect the Delta Hotel to sell out soon. In the meantime, we are working to obtain discounted room blocks at other nearby hotels.  I will post that information and the room rates when it becomes available.

We have three great tours planned for 2022 AACA Grand Nationals participants:

- On Thursday, 19 May 2022, there is a bus tour of Dwight & Jane Schaubach's private restoration facility & automobile collection in Carrollton and Smithfield, VA, respectively (approx. 30 miles from The Founders Inn hotel). Participants will view beautiful classic vehicles and ongoing restoration projects.  Afterwards, they will enjoy a delicious lunch at Smithfield Station restaurant in nearby, quaint Smithfield, VA (home of Smithfield hams.) The tour will depart The Founders Inn at 9 AM and will return around 3 PM.  The cost is $55 per person and includes bus transportation, entry to the Schaubach’s restoration facility and private collection, and lunch at Smithfield Station.  (You preselect your lunch from a limited menu when you register for the Grand Nationals.) The tour is limited to 56 people, so sign up early!

- On Friday, 20 May 2022, there is bus tour to the Nauticus Maritime Discovery Center and USS Wisconsin battleship (the last of the four Iowa-class battleships built in World War II) in Norfolk, VA. The tour will depart The Founders Inn at 9 AM and will return around 1 PM. The cost is $55 per person and includes bus transportation, entry to Nauticus, and a 1.5-hour guided tour of the USS Wisconsin. Lunch is at your own expense after returning to the hotel. This tour is limited to 56 people, so sign up early!

- Also on Friday, 20 May 2022, there is a bus tour to Abacus Racing & Machine Services and owner Bill Thumel’s private automobile collection in Virginia Beach.  The tour will depart The Founders Inn at 9 AM and will return around 2 PM. The cost is $40 and includes bus transportation to both facilities and a catered sandwich & wrap lunch are included in the price of the tour.  This tour is limited to only 56 people, so sign up early!

If the tours sell out as expected, waiting lists will be maintained in case someone who registers for a tour is unable to go.  Anyone who registers for a tour after it sells out will receive a refund for the tour when they receive their AACA Grand Nationals registration packet.)  Thank you very much for your understanding.

Here are three food tips from the Tidewater Region to anyone from outside the area attending the 2022 AACA Grand Nationals in Virginia Beach on 19-21 May 2022:

- Start the day off with the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet in the Swan Terrace Restaurant inside The Founders Inn & Spa.  The cost is a very reasonable $14.95 per person.  You can also order off the breakfast menu, if you prefer.  The restaurant is open for breakfast from 7 - 11 AM Sunday-Saturday.  (Please confirm the restaurant's hours when you check in at the hotel--Hampton Roads is no different than anywhere else in the country right now, and hours at the Swan Terrace and other nearby restaurants may change based on the availability of staff.)

- Enjoy one of the best lunches in Hampton Roads—and one of the best deals—by eating lunch in the Swan Terrace Restaurant from 11:30 AM – 2 PM Monday-Saturday.  Most days during the business week, for $16.95 you get an all-you-can eat lunch buffet with salad, fruit & cheese tray, a selection of vegetable side dishes, usually three different soups, usually three different entrees, and a selection of desserts.  Each day has a different food theme (e.g., Italian, Southern, etc.).  You can also order off the menu, if you prefer.

- Stay over until Sunday (or longer!) and enjoy the Swan Terrace’s delicious Sunday brunch for only $29.95.  Brunch is from 11 AM – 2 PM and includes breakfast and lunch selections plus a seafood bar, salad bar, soups, and a selection of desserts.  It is one of the best brunches in Hampton Roads.  For those who want to depart earlier, you may order off the breakfast menu from 7 – 11 AM.

Marion, Thanks so much for all the great information posted in this thread.

In your post above you mentioned the breakfast buffet in the Swan Terrace Restaurant which sound great. When does the restaurant open on Thursday, Friday and most importantly Saturday mornings? I would image with the tours on Thursday and Friday and the show on Saturday it will open fairly early to give people time for a leisurely meal before starting the day.

Also, on Saturday, will there be outdoor food vendors on or near the show field? If so, will they be serving both breakfast and lunch for show car owners who want a quick bite to eat and do not have time for a meal in the restaurant?

Thanks for answering these questions.

Hello Charlie,

Thank you for your kind words and for letting me know about not including the hours for breakfast.  I just updated the post with the hours.

    To answer your questions:

    - The Swan Terrace is open for breakfast daily (Sunday-Saturday) from 7 - 11 AM.

    - On Saturday, Swan Terrace will have a food tent offering lunch only.  "Quick meal" boxed lunches are available when you register for the show and are probably a good option when you consider that there will likely be more than 1,000 people looking for lunch at the food tent (and the food tent is going to be offering the same "quick meal" deals--pre-ordered lunches will be picked up in a different location, so we expect shorter lines for them).  There are also several restaurants across the street from The Founders Inn that offer lunch and, for those that don't mind driving, a number of other options just a mile south of the hotel.

Both the host hotel for the 2022 Grand Nationals—The Founders Inn & Spa—and the primary alternate hotel—the Delta Hotel—are now sold out.  We have worked with the Director of Sales for the local Marriott hotels who generously opened 30 more rooms each at the nearby Holiday Inn Express, the Aloft Chesapeake hotel, and the Springhill Suites Chesapeake.  (The Holiday Inn Express is next to the Delta Hotel.  The Aloft and Springhill Suites are nearby.)  Each is offering the same group rate of $124/night plus taxes.

I recommend you make your reservations as soon as possible.  The Grand Nationals car show is right at the beginning of tourist season in the Virginia Beach area, and these are great room rates for these dates.

Here are the links for the three hotels:

Online registration for the 2022 AACA Grand Nationals closes at midnight on 19 April 2022 and paper registrations being mailed in must be postmarked no later than 19 April.  Because of the work associated with preparing for the large number of vehicles and judges that usually participate in the Grand Nationals, registration will not be extended, so please register online or mail in your registration today.  Don’t miss out by procrastinating!

Was wondering if any of the tours scheduled for Thursday and Friday are sold out as of 03/25?

Unfortunately, I have to hold off registering until the last minute so I understand if the tours are booked up.

Thanks....

Hello Charlie,

As of today, there are some seats left on each tour.  We expect all three to sell out soon, but we will be keeping a waiting list in case any of the registered participants has to cancel.

Consider registering for the show now so you can lock in any tours you want to go on.  If your plans change and you are unable to attend the show, you can cancel up until 19 April and we will refund your registration fees.  (If you can't come to the show, don't forget to cancel your hotel reservation, too!)

I hope you will be able to come to the show.  Our region has put a lot of planning and effort into organizing it, and it will be a fun event.  I look forward to seeing your there.

The Tidewater Region understands that attending an AACA national activity incurs a lot of associated costs, from the costs to travel to the event, hotel rooms, food, etc.  That’s why we have worked hard to make the 2022 AACA Grand Nationals a fun activity and to limit the costs of the associated activities and meals.  (All three of the tours are bus tours to allow you to socialize with your AACA friends, old and new, during the trip on the bus and to prevent you from having to endure Hampton Roads traffic during rush hour.  Also, parking is limited at the sites we’re visiting.)

The Tidewater Region appreciates everyone who is supporting the 2022 AACA Grand Nationals by attending the show, bringing their antique vehicle, and/or coming to judge, and looks forward to seeing you (and your antique vehicle!) at the 2022 AACA Grand Nationals here in Virginia Beach, VA, on Thursday-Saturday, 19-21 May 2022.

Finally, a recommendation for those not familiar with driving in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area of Virginia:  due to heavy (and slow) traffic during rush hours, we recommend you try to arrive in the area before 3:30 PM on Thursday and 3 PM on Friday, otherwise you can expect to encounter long delays when crossing the bridge-tunnels on I-64 (the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel) or I-664 (the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel).

Again, please contact Bill Treadwell if you are bringing a car trailer.  Thank you very much!  We look forward to seeing you next month.

Hi Marion,

Typo I believe on the email above as I got a delivery error.  Should probably be tbears3@verizon.net

as Verizon does not use .com.

Thanks!  Chuck
