lincolnmatthews
Hello, I know the specs always call out 5 qts. But is this counting the filter or are you suppose to "add one" for the filter? I know one should be able to tell from the float, but just wondering what is actually correct. Don't want to overfill the engine! Thank
abelincoln
Don't know about 42, but my 48 owners manual says 6 quarts. Most of us add a quart for filter. However, if you still use the original rear oil slinger, oil may come out if you park facing uphill. Abe
19tom40
All of the specifications that I have seen for the 1940-1948 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury call for 5 quarts of oil. I believe that the oil filter was standard on the 1942-1948 Lincolns, so 5 quarts would be the specification with the oil filter.
ralphnof49
My 47 takes 5 quarts plus 1 for the filter.
lincolnmatthews
Sounds like the pre-war cars had a smaller pan, ( I read somewhere the drain plug location changed which maybe also changed the column). I will probably go with 5qts total, thanks you guys
