1924 wheel seals and literature needed

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a good source for wheel seals or the felt material to make some.. For a 24 special 6. I would like to check and repack my wheel bearings over the winter while I'm replacing my tires.

Also, I would be interested in a copy of a service manual for this car if anyone has one available.

Thank you.

You can buy sheets of #1 white felt from McMaster-Carr and others in a variety of thicknesses.  The Studebaker National Museum archives may have the drawings for your felts if you have the part number.  Faxon Auto Literature has a reprint of the shop manual, though I don’t see a parts manual available for 1924. You can punch seal rings with sharpened steel tube, copper pipe, or aluminum tube and a small  hydraulic press.  In a pinch, a sharp razor knife or hobby knife will do the job.

For my Light Six, I just measured the seal bore and shaft diameter and used a modern lip seal replacement from CR. Keeps the grease in, but more importantly, keeps the water out better than felt.
