NoHo Matt Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 Hi! Just bought an '89 TC in red with just over 36k miles on it...and two weeks in, my odometer has stopped. (My fuel gauge is dead, too, but I knew that when buying.) A few calls locally have gotten me nowhere (you're shocked, I know). Anyone have leads on a mechanic anywhere in LA County willing and able to work on these cars? Would be much appreciated. Thank you!
wild bill Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 Not my part of the world but on the TC forum page top right is a search function. I pick this forum also to narrow things down. Quite a bit of info of your issue. I just had my whole speedometer replaced by Larry at TC parts. Most of them stop at 80k. Yours went early.
marty mopar Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 (edited) odometer gear can be replaced available aftermarket https://www.odometergears.com/products/Chrysler-Dodge/All/5 fuel gauge...it might be dead or it might be your sending unit in the tank Edited October 14, 2021 by marty mopar (see edit history) 1
Hemi Dude Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Replacing the gear/s in the odometer motor is a job for someone who has done it before, successfully! Replacements from Larry or having yours repaired through Larry is one way. Otherwise, be sure that the person you find locally is experienced with this sort of repair. Many foreign cars have the same issue and some foreign car repair shops that deal with BMW or VOLVO cars could be able to help you. 2
TCAuburn Posted October 16, 2021 Posted October 16, 2021 Hi, my odometer cluster was sent to a shop in Whittier to be fixed (through a mechanic here in Bakersfield). I thought he said it was Speed Shop but it might have been Speedo Check. I will ask the shop next week. I will be thinning out my cars soon as we will be moving out of the country. ...mark 1
NoHo Matt Posted October 17, 2021 Author Posted October 17, 2021 Guys, thank you - this is all helpful. Mark, any lead you might have on the place in Whittier would be great -- I'm down there fairly often, as it happens. And I just ordered new gears from the odometergears website, so thank you, all! Really glad I found this group after very casually buying this odd, fun car!
TCAuburn Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Hi Matt, sorry it took so long, The shop is Speedo Check in Whittier. The shop said they are 'not the quickest' but are one of the few on the west coast to fix the odometers. I hope this helps some! 1
NoHo Matt Posted October 26, 2021 Author Posted October 26, 2021 So helpful, thank you! I just got my gears in the mail today, so the timing is perfect!
