The worst years for chrome plating on new autos was about 1951-1953. My understanding is that in order to conserve materials for the war effort, only a very thin coat of chrome was used on car trim and then it was covered with clear lacquer paint for (minimal) protection. NOS chrome pieces for cars in these years are often found with this inferior "plating" technique. The chrome finish is often worn through and they just don't look as nice as the trim from earlier & later years.

I thought the same thing when I first saw it. "Restored 20 years ago" and then parked at the beach, is what I thought.
