leomara
This tire size was on my car, Goodyear's and fairly petrified from age. It appears this size is currently unavailable and 600/650 - 18 or 650 - 18 is. Will that work or am I going to create future problems?
Gunsmoke
I would be surprised if 600-18 was factory tire size for your car, sounds too wide to me. My 1931 Chrysler CD8 for example only took 550-18 tires from factory. The 18" CD8 rims measure 4.25" outside width, and 3.25" between bead faces. A set of Marmon 19" rims I have measure only 3.75" wide, and 2.75" bead to bead and probably wore 4.75-5.00 tires. Measure width of your rims (outer width and bead to bead) and that should evolve to a proper tire size.
maok
A couple of years ago when I need 2 new tyres for my '28 series 62, which had the lovely looking Firestone deluxe 18 6.00/6.50 I had trouble finding them. I could only find the Firestone 18 5.00/5.50 (non deluxe). Though I am in Australia, so tyre options are limited anyway.
viv w
Morning Leo, My book "American car spotters Guide" and Coker Tire show the Chrysler 72 used a 30 X 600 tire, which is actually a 18 X 600. I googled for this size tire, it would appear that they no longer make this size tire anymore, but Longstone Tyres in UK recommend using the 600/650 X 18 , see below. I would suggest you measure the diameter of your old 600 X18 tires and then see which make of tire comes closest to that diameter. I think I saw in a Coker Tire catalogue, where they had a comparison of diameters for each make of tire, size for size. It was interesting that the same size tyre from different manufacturers, could have different diameters. the 600/650x18 tire will be the same width as your old tire on the rim, but the 650 indicates a slightly larger diameter. It may cause your speedo to under read. Also when buying tires, make sure you buy good quality heavy tubes. Some of the tubes offered are of dubious manufacture, very thin, and although cheap, they don't last long. Michelin tubes might be expensive, but the quality should be there. The attached info is from a UK supplier, but I'm sure Lucas / coker or Universal Tire carry all these tires in USA, talk to the guys for further advice. Regards Viv. leomara
Gunsmoke, I'd really be surprised if they were not the right size, they were on the car since ??? the inner tubes were red rubber! Then again that doesn't mean anything.....
Gunsmoke
Appears from new posts that 600 18 is correct for the model. 550x18 may show very little difference, about 1/2" narrower, perhaps 1/2"-1" smaller diameter.
Narve N
Higher tires makes for a longer legged car. A good idea if you can have a test drive with your current set of tires and decide if you would like to stay on the same diameter or increase/decrease a bit. I just put a pair of 4.50/5.00x18 garage roller tires on my Series 65 racing/special project and was surprised by the noticeable smaller diameter of them compared to the 5.50/6.00x18 normally put on a Series 65. As a general rule, never go smaller (diameter) than original. That car will eventually have 6.50x19 tires being a cool 4 inches higher than the originals, hopefully the horsepower will be able to handle the longer legs too. The 31 DeSoto pictured here is a well known example of putting taller tires on an old Mopar, believe they are 6.50 or 7.00 by 19 inch radials.
