They are the back lot specials all in need of more work than I want to do. Might consider selling them. I have one car already in the paint shop another just got dropped off there today and and still another went to the glass shop yesterday to spend a few days. So I am currently without a project.... until this little gem showed up! Time on my hands, a fresh pot of coffee just brewed and this Plymouth is just crying for a restoration. Guest Posted May 6, 2021 Share Posted May 6, 2021 You asked for it. (and I needed it!) A dremel took care of the chassis rivets. All disassembled. Used a heat gun to warm the roof enough to soften the TAXI sign plastic "rivets" and pulled it loose. Time to strip that 62 year old paint. Bottom plate is dinged and bent along the sides and down at both ends, near the mounting rivets, rendering the suspension spring useless. Ten minutes with a wooden drift, mallet and a pair of needle nose pliers and all is good again. Chassis ends are straight and suspension is nice and bouncy. Wheels and tires are good to go. The cars belonged to my wife’s two cousins. I purchased the collection which had over 100 pieces in it. They are indeed fun to rehab. Where else can you have so much fun for so little $$$. The antenna boom needed to be restrung to raise / lower it and the antenna was missing. Using some parts on my workbench I made an antenna from the bottom of a plastic Easter egg. Guest Posted May 6, 2021 Share Posted May 6, 2021 (edited) OK, I had to make a judgement call on this stark, bland, androgynous, white molded interior. The small hole in the passenger area floor is not rust, like so many Mopars from this era! Rather it is the word PLAZA molded into the part (as all parts of this car have) but so thin that it has cracked apart a little bit. Not a structural problem, just cosmetic and will not show when assembled. Interestingly, this molded interior is not made of the heavier plastic like the Matchbox cars were. It is made of a very light, very thin, celluloid-like material and, while slightly flexible, feels very fragile. It was begging for some depth so I decided to dig out the old Testors model paint and two-tone it. I went with brown/tan as that seemed appropriate for a purpose built service car. A few spots of silver on the dash board as well. (all sins will be hidden upon re-installation) I understand that the purists may now be tugging their hair and gnashing their teeth but I think this "upgrade" is enough in keeping with the original style of the car so as not to be considered a "restomod". Guest Posted May 6, 2021 Share Posted May 6, 2021 I used this spray stripper John. Available at Lowes, but I'm sure any similar brand would work just as well. Sprayed, let it sit 10 min. Guest Posted May 7, 2021 Share Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) First coat of paint is on. I chose this gloss "Marigold" by Rust-oleum. I don't usually care for Rust-oleum for automotive uses, due to it's extended dry time. But it is a good durable paint for this application and fairly chip resistant (for when I'm huckin' around in the dirt in my backyard with this car next week). The color is a very good match to taxi-cab or school bus yellow, cap is pretty accurate. Got the bend out of the front of the roof without difficulty. Paint is on nice and smooth. For some reason my phone cam is not transferring this color accurately. It looks very "canary yellow" in these pics but I can assure you it has quite a bit more orange in it than what's showing here. Perhaps it's due to the brown background. Well, that needs to set up for 24 hours before I can do anymore with it, so I'm out... but I will stay in radio contact.
