Reaper1 Posted March 24, 2021 Share Posted March 24, 2021 Well, I just made the LONG 2200 mile or so trip from Seattle to St. Louis because I moved. The convoy of vehicles were: 26' Budget box truck towing my '89 Royal Cabernet TC, my '99 Ram 2500 towing my '88 Shelby Z, me driving my '90 Daytona, and my friend driving the '89 16V TC. We had *1* major failure, and I hate that it was on the 16V car. The timing belt tensioner munched the bearing. Good thing these engines aren't interference, and I happened to have a spare on the other TC. We got it swapped and back on the road in less than an hour on the side of the highway! The thing is, now I need either another 16V tensioner, OR I need to try and source the bearing for the one that disintegrated. I was able to save the outer and inner parts of the tensioner pulley, so I am hoping to maybe find a bearing. For those that don't know, the 16V tensioner is different than the 8V one due to spacing. I have heard adaptions have been made with varying degrees of success. For all of the things I have learned and know, this is one that I haven't got much experience with yet, so looking for some advice or help. Turbo Kane Posted March 24, 2021 Share Posted March 24, 2021 Common block 2.5L tensioner with a spacer. I took measurements from my old tensioner and used some washers to get proper alinement. If any TC owner needed help regardless of if they’ve paid their dues or not came to me I’d help them. If owning a TC means you have to be part of a club to have the resources to fix or enjoy conversation about these cars then why would anybody want to own one? I’m not anti-club because I’m a member of the Shelby Dodge Auto Club but when you pay dues it goes to putting on an annual event that anyone’s welcome to go to and also receive news letters sent to members probably similar to yours. As for providing help, discussion, and making parts available to the community they don't single out non-members. I have been a TCA member since 1995 when I bought one of these cars and had my shop from 1988-2012. This was a one 'person' operation, (just so I stay PC) My computer was for generating invoices and keeping track of inventory. It was not on-line! I didn't even have an Internet connection. Now that I am 'here', I help where I can, even provide parts and have loaned tools to some people. One thing I don't need is my ass chewed out! When I retired, I had time to browse the internet and found this group. I'm not on the internet now to try to find people to sell stuff to even though I have quite an inventory of NOS Chrysler parts. Rick is in the TCA club and sells parts to non-club members as well as TCA members. When someone asks, I will sell to anyone if I have a part to spare, such as 2 new timing belts I sold for a 16v engine recently. But mostly I just help with information here and in the club. It's a lot of bother messing with parts and you never know, I might have to use some on my 291,000 mile TC from time to time, as I had to when my cylinder head eroded and had to be repaired. I even considered using a new head in its place, but I had already taken to old one to the machine shop when I discovered the box with the new one. I'll save it for next time, if there is one. I hope you are happy with my reply! I am glad you clarified it for me. I have no problems with you or the TCA club. As an enthusiast and someone who appreciates owning a TC I know how important it is to have people willing to provide resources to keep these cars alive. With that being said I’m sorry if what I said came off wrong. I believe club member or not that someone who wants to own a TC should be able to get the help their looking for here.
