FS: 1950 MG TD

Recommended Posts

TD 0581 came off the line in January, 1950. It has spent most of its known life in California with a 10 year foray into Texas. Earliest records show it was in Southern California in the 1980s and early 1990s At some point, after a restoration, it went to a private collector in the Dallas area. Upon his death, I purchased the car from his estate in 2012 and had it shipped from Texas to Northern California. At all times it has been garage kept and rarely, if ever, driven in inclement weather. TD 0581 is a blast to drive and gets nothing but smiles from passing motorists and pedestrians. This is not a concours level TD, but a very fine driver that can be enjoyed as is or can be easily restored to concours condition for show. While not perfect, it is a strong “5 to 10 footer”, with a few small paint chips but no “dings” or accident damage.

TD 0581 is a “numbers matching” car with original 1250 cc XPAG engine and transmission. At some point early in its life, engine was over-bored by .120 so it now is about 1366 cc (according to W.F.K. Wood) and has a little extra “oomph”. The TD is driven on a pretty much daily basis, with no problems. It starts on the first pull, idles calmly and shifts smoothly. Four wheel drum brakes provide adequate stopping power even on hills. Over the past eight years, considerable work has been done to make this a reliable, fun driver. Work includes:

Replacement of Master Cylinder, wheel cylinders and all brake shoes.

New starter.

Fuel pump rebuilt as all-electronic.

Radiator recored and modern thermostat installed.

Rebuilt rear springs.

Rebuilt SU carbs

New seat cushions

An engine rebuild within the last 12 months, including new bearings, new piston rings (custom fitted by Deves), new clutch, pressure plate and bearing, refurbished rocker arm assembly (Rocker Arms Unlimited), new timing chain and tensioner.

Over the years, the TD has been faithfully maintained with regular work performed by a highly skilled and experienced mechanic. There are probably other smaller details that have been ironed out but I would need to go through the records to list them all.

There is no known rust on the body and the wood frame is solid. At the time of its restoration in the 1980s, it received a full undercoating, preventing rot. TD 0581 comes with full weather equipment, a full length tonneau in good condition, shop manual, road tools and some spare parts. TD 0581 is currently registered in California and has a clean title. Car is located in Northern California, about 75 miles north of San Francisco.

This is a really fine example of the MG TD and is realistically priced at $21,500. Contact: drduffy138@gmail.com
