BamaWildcat
I've got a newer 300 coming for the LeSabre. Unlike the engine that came in it that is incorrectly painted Chebby orange, I want to give the newer engine a makeover with a correct silver. My question is what is a close match to the Buick silver used on the 1965 300 C.I. motor? I want it to be close to authentic, but don't want to pay $8 a spray can out of the catalog plus shipping. Can someone direct me to a close match that a local store like AutoZone, Advance, NAPA, or Home Depot sells? Thanks in advance!
ol' yeller
If your LeSabre is a 1965, I'm pretty sure that the engine color for the 300 should be Buick turquoise. That is the correct color for the Skylark 300. In 1964 the 300 was silver as the heads (and intake) were aluminum. In 1965 they went to cast iron heads (and intake) and painted the engine turquoise. Guest John Chapman
Old Yeller is correct....In 1964, the 300 engine was painted silver and in 1965 Buick green (turquoise?). If you have a '65 motor and want it to appear correct for a '64, silver would be the color. I don't know that there is a silver that is correct, but I think you can find a servicable silver for less than $8 a can. Try NAPA, they probably have a match.JMC

BamaWildcat
Thanks for the replies everybody. I will be going with the correct finish for '64.
Guest COMPACTBC
I don't think the '64 heads and the intake manifold were painted at all. Didn't they leave them in their natural aluminum color. The predecessor to the 300 engine is the 215 all aluminum engine and the heads and intake manifold were not painted. However the 300 block was probably painted since it was cast iron. I would use a dull aluminum color not a bright silver. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

BamaWildcat
Well, I tell you, after having the '65 300 in my garage for a week and seeing the pretty Buick green, I am going to stick with it. It reminds me of the 401 my parents had in their '64 Wildcat while I was growing up. On top of that, I can just give the engine a good cleaning, and sanding and painting won't be necessary.
