Restorer32
Beginning a rebuild on a '23 Packard 6 engine. Serial # stamped on the engine is U28309. The number is in the sequence for a '23 6 but what does the U mean, if anything?
Bill Boudway
I believe it's for "First Series Single Six". Model # 116. Our friends here had a single six, Ser # U-11971. They called it a 1922. I have a "Standard Service Manual" For the 116-526 series.
nzcarnerd
Just curious - did Packard put a casting date on their blocks?
Bill Boudway
Hi, Don't know about the single six models, but our Twin Six has a casting date of 3/20/19 cast in the base.
edinmass
Unless it’s a Pierce Arrow or Cadillac, I’m not likely to know. It’s a bit early for my scholarship on Packards.....I’m kind of a 1932-1934 guy on the “off brand P cars.” 😇 Edited February 5, 2021 by edinmass (see edit history)
DavidMc
I had a 1922 6 cylinder Packard 126 Sport with the following numbers: Body number U 14... AR Chassis number U 14... Engine number U 14... B Its just the way they were numbered, I don't think the "U" means anything. I also have a spare 1924 226 engine that does not have a letter prefix
