JamesR
...America had rediscovered the toilet paper oil filter!  Yes...this apparently was a real thing. Have any of you ever used this before? (I mean as an oil filter 😄)
hchris
Yep, been around for quite a while as suggested substitute for contemporary oil filters
The 55er
I learned to drive on a 1960 Oldsmobile that had one of these toilet paper filters installed, I remember my father changing it.

AURktman
The 1955 Chevy V8 and 1955-57 I6 had one of those type of oil filter attachments and it was quite common for rolls of toilet paper to find their way into the housings in place of true filters.
ply33
You can still get that type of filter new. Though it appears that the special Franz cellulose media (a.k.a. toilet paper) is currently out of stock. 1

Guest
Â Is it OK to use recycled paper on it?
Marty Roth
While my 1960 Rambler American had an external and inverted FRAM spin-on oil filter, my father's 1959 Rambler American, with the same flathead 6 had a Toilet Paper aftermarket oil filter. The first time I changed my filter, even after letting it sit for some time after warming up the engine, during filter removal the remaining oil which had not completely drained from the filter managed to spill everywhere. I learned a "trick", and that was to punch a hole at the top of the spin-on filter to allow more complete draining, and to use a shop rag or paper towel arond the base to reduce the mess.
