For Sale: Extraordinary 1911 Packard Model 18 Runabout.

 For the 1911 model year, Packard built less than 400 Model 18 automobiles with the majority production being touring cars. The runabouts were built on a special, short wheelbase chassis and used a variety of other components that differed from those used on the longer wheel-based touring cars and limousines.  

 

     This 1911 Packard Model 18 runabout, #19101, is believed to be the only authentic example in existence today. Well documented in The Early Packard Registry, it is the only 1911 Model 18 runabout listed with its authentic and original body as well as its correct, short wheelbase chassis and matching numbers engine. 

 

      Packard #19101 has a comprehensive and impressive ownership history. It has been owned by the “who’s who” of the collector car world. 

 

      Although the first owner is unknown, the second owner was a Frederick Ward from New Jersey who purchased the car in 1916. He kept the car into the 1940s when it was sold to its first pioneer collector, David Tunick of Connecticut who kept the car until 1958. Tunick sold the car to the noted Packard collector and famed automotive designer, Dick Teague of Michigan who owned the car from 1958 through 1960 when he sold the car to another prominent Michigan collector, Jack Frost. Frost kept the car for a few years before selling it to Norm Viney of Ohio who retained the car until 1980. In 1980, the car found its way to the collection of the early Packard authority, Bob Erasquin in Ohio, who owned it briefly before selling it to Morgan Yost. Yost retained the car until 1998. For the last 20 years, this car has been in a private collection in Spain and has just recently been returned to the US. 


      This is an extremely original car and correct car. With the exception of the floorboards, the body retains much of its original wood as well as all of its other body components. The original, matching numbers, 267.5 CID, T-head engine has its correct components including a correct, Packard carburetor. The chassis is intact with its correct and often missing components including its original Hartford shock absorbers, proper oilers, etc. What is most impressive about this car is the amount of original hardware and trim items that this car retains on both the body and the chassis. A full set of proper brass accessories includes the “Packard 18” script headlamps, matching sidelamps, taillight, bulb horn, etc.-all of which are in excellent, restored condition. The dashboard has its full and proper complement of gauges and controls as well as its original Packard ID plate stamped 19101.  For ease of operation, the car has been fitted with a contemporary, 12-volt electric starter and a later, Bosch magneto has been installed. 


    This car was likely restored about 30 years ago. The restoration has been well maintained and car presents extremely well inside and out, top to bottom. The paint shows some minor imperfections but is extremely strong and presentable. The red leather interior also presents well and the car has a full cape top and a correct windshield assembly. 

 

   Since being returned to the US, the car has received an extensive mechanical and cosmetic servicing. It starts easily and runs well with easy shifting and precise steering. The car is quick and agile with a sports car performance not often seen in pre-World War I automobiles.

 

    Those who know early brass cars understand why early Packards have a rich and enviable touring history. They are highly sought after by those who actively and aggressively drive their cars. Pre-1913 Packards, such as this example, rarely trade hands publicly. They are owned by some of the most significant and well-regarded collections. This sporty and desirable 1911 Model 18 runabout has never been offered for sale publicly and presents a great opportunity for its next and fortunate caretaker.
