Guest Posted January 7, 2021 Share Posted January 7, 2021 I've always had a soft spot for the 1966 & '67 Toronados. "The car with the science fiction styling!" Initial 1962 drawing by David North. A bold move from the exciting 1960's custom era by Olds chief designer Stan Wilen. They also intentionally added design cues that paid tribute to the Cord 810/812, the last American front-wheel-drive production car: the hidden headlamps, the grille that subtly turns rearward at the ends, the phone-dial wheels. Guest Posted January 7, 2021 Share Posted January 7, 2021 I've owned two of these over the years (and yes, one was gold!😄). I found the drive train to be very reliable. The trans was basically a Turbo 400, so practically bullet proof. Engines put out better than average torque. I think a little bit of the promlematic stigma came from mechanics who just weren't familiar with the set up. Eventually the axle joints could go bad like any other part if not maintained. I'd really like to have another. I usually keep an eye out for a nice Toro (66-67), Riviera (66-67) or Eldo (67-68). What a time for stylistic personal luxury cars! I don't know when that problem was solved, but I never heard that later years had the same difficulty. Norbye and Jim Dunne page 126: "The pre-pilot-production test car had used an 8.00-15 standard profile tire. They were found some what lacking in tractive ability, cornering stability and appearance, which led to the development of an whole new tire design, the TFD (Toronado Front Drive) with its own tread design, on an 8.85-15 carcass in collaboration with Firestone. The TFD tread pattern gave better traction on wet surfaces, and the carcass had a higher cord angle to make the side walls a little stiffer. Uniroyal was also contracted to produce the TFD tire , and later, Goodyear radials were made optional. Steve_Mack_CT Posted May 4, 2021 Share Posted May 4, 2021 (edited) The orange-ish 66 we discussed here a couple weeks ago in CT just dropped to $13k. I think sometimes people place a higher priority on moving something along than optimal price. Is it worth having the car around for several months to get the additional money? Depends on why the seller is selling in the first place. That sure is an attractive price on the PA based car, and yes, it looks much better in the daylight.
