That's a 1962 Buick Special convertible with the 198 V-6. Rare car with a lot of good, hard-to-find parts. If I lived near Atlanta, this car would already be loaded up on my trailer! I think it's a Special Deluxe with the power top (8,332 made--I just did an article on these for the Bugle), but I also see a big spring for the top mechanism, and thought the spring-loaded tops were only for the manual top cars in the bottom of the line Special (7,918 of those made).

I think I knew that but that pointy front fender fools me every time. Thanks for the kind reminder Pete

Here's some more info from Bruce Kile who sent me the note of it being available.

Well Mr "E", maybe the reason you don't see "many" 61 Sky/Spec convertibles is because they didnt make any. (lol)62 was the first year for rag tops in the "little cars". 7,918 Specials with manual tops , 8,332 with power top. This free one is a manual top. ( Mod 4067) The Skylark series were all power top & V/8.   It's going to the crusher probably in mid Jan if no takers step up. BTW a friend of mine has a good running V/6 for $200, Which is the exact engine for that car.(hint-hint) I'm running an ad in our newsletter.  At least you have someplace to stash it or hold it for a buyer. Oh BTW, "Ivan" from Calif is now the proud owner of my friend's 35 street rod....Thanks again for your help getting it sold.......BK

So @Pete Phillips, you think I should go for it?

  • MrEarl changed the title to 1961... correction, 1962- Convertible Free in Atlanta

Car was purchased by a lady for $3000 3-4 years ago for use as a parts car for her 62 Skylark Convertible. Running when parked at the restoration shop that is moving and is cleaning up their lot.

My son has always liked these cars and hoping to convince him to take this one on as a project.

Lamar, please give the obligatory bath and post results.  Many, you can't beat that price!  Please keep us posted on the remaining condition, and if you get it running, etc.

working on it lance. Using a combination of one part Mean Green, one part Barkeepers Friend and 4 parts Elbow Grease to get the 5 years of pecan tree sap and mold off the exterior. Then blowing and vacuuming the foot deep layer of leaves in the floor. Pulling up some carpet revealed the floors as well as the trunk and pan are all solid. There are some rust bubbles in lower rear quarter. 98EE5194-05E7-4AB0-AA88-787A4E0F1D44.thumb.jpeg.b90ec75bea765ebc4f5ae057b566edd0.jpeg

Hi Lamar

These are real neat cars, I had one as well a while back and restored a 62 Convertible 5 years ago. I have a lot of bits and pieces for them, specially convertible parts, if you need anything.

Good luck with it.

Steve

It really is a neat little Buick Steve, wasn't aware you had one. You know what I say..."pictures or it din't happen" 😉

While I'd love to get on the road, it would take a lot of time and effort and I already have several projects in line ahead of it so will be offering it for sale once I determine a fair price to ask.

OK gang, as I can't keep this car, and not familiar with their values,  I could use your help in determining a fair price for use in selling.

Here's what I've determined and learned after giving it a good clean up.

It appears that the previous owner had started an amateur restoration and only got as far as a respray. At that point it must have been purchased by the shop where i got it for use as a parts car for a same year Skylark.

The gas tank and back seat are MIA as well as front and rear interior door and side panels. The convertible top is toast but is all there frame is in excellent condition. The shop said it was a running driving car when they acquired it and the engine turns freely when turning crank by the fan belt. I prefer to let the next owner deal with spinning the oil pump and turning the engine prior to firing up.

The floors, pan and trunk are solid. There is some heavy surface in some of the floorboard but no rust through and passed the screwdriver test fine.

The following pictures should show the overall condition, condition of parts and extent that it was dismantled during the time it was being "restored" or used for parts.

  • MrEarl changed the title to For Sale-1962 Special Convertible in Georgia

I have decided to go ahead and try and find this car a good home so am offering it up here first for $1,200. IMO, considering how it is a virtually rust free solid southern car and a convertible, it is more a candidate for looking for a parts car FOR rather than it being a parts car itself. Considering that and the 3 days I spent going after and cleaning it up and sorting parts, I feel $1,200 is a fair price for seller and buyer. Granted there will have to be some searching for parts or possibly even a parts car but isn't that part of the fun, LOL. There are lots of 62 Special and Skylark salvage parts/parts cars currently on eBay.  Also Steve @FireballV8 mentioned he has some parts he might sell.

Sold with Bill of Sale,  Georgia doesn't issue titles for vehicles of this age.  PM if interested.

On eBay now. 26 watchers  yaayyyyy 😄

https://www.ebay.com/itm/164637511527

So the selling guidelines have changed since I last sold a car on eBay. No more final value fees of 10% and there are other options for payment other than PayPal which removes another 4-5%,  just a listing fee of $25,$55 or $95 based on number of photos and Reserve Price and or whether using the Buy it Now Option.

If anyone here wants it I'll end the auction before any bids. I'll loose my $95 listing fee but no problem....

SOOO, after discovering the vin plate was missing and adding note of that in the eBay ad, one bidder cancelled. Then after seeing the terrible feedback the other bidder had, I canceled his bid, just not in the mood for his non payment BS.  Auction ends tonight, will regroup and consider listing again or just including it in the  Buick Gardens Pick Your own inventory.

Crap!  That sucks.  A rotten parts car would still make this a viable build.  I just saw one somewhere a few months back (maybe here) I think, so they are out there.
